General Information Pertaining to the Musician in Question and His Work:
Broken bottles, stars, bus rides, children's games, family history, leaving home, love, the night sky, and a singularly peculiar word in a poem written by a communist: these are just a few of the things that collectively inspired the songs making up Brock Tyler's unexpected Unclosing.
Seemingly following suit, the album's instrumentation and arrangements prove as diverse as its inspiration. Each of its eleven songs are strong enough to stand alone yet choose instead the company of a collection of instruments, such as banjo, trumpet, piano, organ, xylophone, and handclaps. Tyler himself performed all of the instruments and steered the arrangements, ranging from brass quartets to the closing track's vocally-rich outro.
Yet, despite the ornamentation, the songs are just as at home all alone with Tyler and his guitar on stage. Unique and accessible, they feature memorable melodies and (as one fellow songwriter noted) “masterfully written†lyrics, which, when combined with Tyler's impressive finger-picking style and humble stage presence, are captivating enough to quiet a room.
Unclosing has hit the top ten on campus radio stations in Canada and is continuing to garner attention near and far. In the spring of 2008 Tyler completed a tour of western and central Canada in support of Unclosing that spanned between Victoria, BC and Ottawa, ON.
Currently based in Edmonton, Tyler was raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba and began cultivating his musical abilities at an early age, learning the trumpet, guitar, drums, and piano. In 2004 he released A Canvas for Clarity, a six song EP showcasing his gift for tightly-knit songwriting and a unique finger-picking style. It was in August 2005 that he began working on what was to become Unclosing, eventually releasing it in July 2007 after two years of sporadic and nomadic recording. Tyler has plans for new releases in 2008 and 2009.
