Recognized as one of the fastest growing labels in town, DIE SLO Entertainment has made their presence known in the Live Music Capital of the World. Notorious for their trademark chant, “D-I-E-S-L-Oâ€, this trio label has caught the attention of many hip-hop fans in the Austin area. Like many, these performers have made it their business to collaborate and network with other local artist’s to pursue their quest to be noticed. “We’re not going to stop with just Texas we want the world, we want to be remembered in the book of hip-hop†coming from one Die Slo member Big JD. However, they don’t have to try very hard, their versatility and creativity speaks for itself. This isn’t your average one or two guys jumping on the stage. Die Slo is an “Army†determined to get the word out, which is exactly why the “Street Team†was created by one die hard Die Slo fan named Young Oct. It’s put into even clearer perspective by another member of the street team named Big K when he states, “The idea is to have a group of people that are out there willing to go up to anyone and everyone and let them know just a little bit about Die Slo Entertainmentâ€.
The label came into existence in 2007 when 14 homeboys came together and decided to make a difference in the local rap industry. J-Dub, who is in SMC states, “Die Slo is my family, I see them as blood, not as friends - most of them I’ve known for the majority of my life†Other members describe their relationship as “A close bondâ€, “Brothersâ€, and “Like one big familyâ€. Most of the members were born and raised in the South part of Austin and have grown up together in school. They were friends before they were label mates. In talking with them, it’s clear that their strong relationship with one another is what makes the label a success. They’re able to communicate well with one another and appear to have all the same goals and dreams for themselves in the industry.
Determined to control the stage with clever lyrics and catchy hooks, they’ve worked diligently to see their goals come to pass. Die Slo is acknowledged for their consistency of creating hit after hit beginning with songs like
Killin It , ....You Can Do It! , Money Overload , Hood Star , Knuckle Up , Said Some , Can't Be Fazed and Mouthin Off featuring Jonsense. More recently, the label has released their newest creation, Get Sum Moe featuring Lil’ Milez. Die Slo has also opened up for Texas Rap Lords such as: ZRO, Trae, Lil Flip, and ESG. They’ve also been a part of Texas Relays and Block 2 Block.
In the beginning of 2009, Die Slo promises new material, along with a new logo , to go with the New Year. The anticipated Official Die Slo T-shirts, promoting their new release “Get Sum Moeâ€, are constantly in demand and are available to all hip-hop/rap fans throughout the city in a variety of colors and sizes. In addition, their “Official Die Slo Samplerâ€, mixed by Top Flight DJ’s ‘The Real Chino’, includes small bits of unheard material that is now available for free downloading on Datpiff.com. The sampler is also currently being distributed by Die Slo Entertainment at various shows throughout the city. When asked about the particulars of the new CD release, called “The Obituaryâ€, the only answer we could get from Big JD was, “The Album is on the way, I think this CD will definitely grab the attention of the worldâ€.
It is very obvious that they have big plans for the label in 2009. As J.R. and Cham, two Fiyah Boy members put it, “If we stay focused, our hard work will be rewarded - It’s about expanding the Die Slo name, more shows, and the Big Breakâ€. By attending a more recent show, and seeing the reaction of the crowd during their performance, these plans are not so far fetched. These guys definitely make the crowd bounce. People were drawn from the back of the club to the front of the stage as soon as they were introduced and their music started.
Keeping true to their motto, ‘Stay Humble but Stay Hungry’, there are only good things to come in the future for Die Slo Entertainment. “There’s so much music being planned for release in 2009 it’s like no limit, we are going to do videos, more mix tapes, albums, huge concerts, and get everything together completely with the label†coming from one THC member, Stat 1. Another member of THC, Clova, wraps it up by saying “We are really working hard and it always feels good to get positive feedback on our material – I really think in 2009 we’re going to shock the worldâ€.
In conclusion, what makes this label different from all others is put best by Mex, a member of SMC, when he states… “I think we don’t compare to most local labels because each group in Die Slo has a different style that fans can relate toâ€â€¦ SMC delivers catchy hooks and creative beats, THC brings crazy lyrics to the table, and Fiyah Boy puts a touch of rhythm and melody in almost every creation. Along with a strong stage presence, the combination of all three groups creates a masterpiece. That in short, is what makes this label unique. Here is a run down of the Die Slo Family.
