Free World

About Me

Founded in 82 when Steven Wytas met Jason Szostek while attending St Thomas Aquinas HS in New Britain CT. Tinkering with budget recording equipment and an expanding array of effects, synths , drum machines and samplers, they were content to pass tapes around to their freinds. That was until Wytas graduated and began communications studies at CCSU where he also became a dj at WFCS. In 85, WFCS sumbitted Free World in CMJ's Best Unsigned Band competition and out of the hundreds of submissions from college stations across the country was chosen to be in the top 10. "Supply and Demand" was released on the Epic Records compilation co-produced with CMJ and, that version at least, would become their most widely distributed song. In 86 Wytas met Bill Dumas of New London's own Vinyl Siding Records. Free World would release its debut album "Amagi" in the fall of 86 on VSR. It would get some good college radio airplay as well as some nice reviews. They even played "live", dragging all that stuff out, twice. 87 found Free World working hard in their studio "TechnoRubble" recording local bands, emerging rap groups and corporate video. By 88 they nearly finished their follow up album "The Tyranny of Culture". It was passed around to some underground labels and got some interest, but despite the fact that it was in many ways a sonically superior work to "Amagi", Free World remained too hard to classify and market for even the labels that were the most left afield. In 88 they called it quits without the last album seeing the light of day except as a cassette promo. Perhaps it may find a home for itself on the internet someday soon?Thomas Myspace Editor V4.4 (www.strikefile.com/myspace)
