About Me

circa 2007venture_electrichas existed on the fringes of the auckland music scene for about 5 years, with one foot in a day job and the other one persisting on hobby-ing along with the fun in writing noisy pop songs. Up till now it's been a fairly revolving door line-up of mates, hired help, and pro's gracious enough to work with (nothing-better-to-do) Benjamin Somerville. highlights include the video for 'realise' shot in 2004 by Ed Davis and released on the inaugural alowhum DVD. the debut album (self titled) released on powertool records in 2005, garnered some cute little reviews, got played on bFM a fair bit and sank peacefully to the bottom of the pond where it resides to this day. skip too 2007 and there is a new set of songs building and expanding on the sounds and idears up to now.'leave alone' is the latest and oldest single from auckland rock band venture electric. it's the oldest because benjamin somerville began writing it in 1998 and in 2007 he is happy to say that it it finished, for now anyway. as you'll here / see in the lyrics - the song took it's inspiration from a moment waiting in line at the border to go over to gibralter (in 1998. you have to walk across the airport runway on your way into Gibralter) and from there it gets a little non-fiction. the song is a little bit wussy a little bit heart-on-sleeve, some of them just end up that way.in 2007 after finishing this recording venture electric turned a corner when Danny Manetto started in playing drums there has been fun times writing and rehearsing new songs.the new single is available as a download athttp://www.amplifier.co.nzspecificallyhttp://www.amplifier .co.nz/artist/1699/venture_electric.htmland the song is set to be included in the powertool recordscompilation - Bullet holes 3 due for release 2008thankscirca 2005 Venture_electric is an anomaly in the N.Z. music scene. They're not pop(they are), they're not punk(a little bit), they're marginally experimental, but shouldn't be characterized as such. The anthemic first track from their self titled debut album will consume the listener with its gushing " I luv heather nova" and "hmmm... theres an introspective person" lyrics. The Auckland Bands debut is a blend of carthatic and caustic observation.Formed in 2002 and armed with a hotcake, Benjamin Somerville (In collaboration with Gavin Murphy who co-wrote realise and contributed / collaborated immensely on ½ the songs on the album) has long abandoned the singer/songwriter schtick.Hip hop, break beat, jazz and world music styles have all been sampled and explored and none of these flavours are exhibited in the simple noisy pop songs that Venture_electric persist on playing. The raw hi-fi sound, has been created by the salubrious talents of producer / engineer Dale Cotton. From the backwards piano that starts the record thru to the guitar loop that closes the record and dozens of deft sonic touches in between.
