About Me

Hello, I’m Brian Betula. Well actually my name is Brian Birch. I believe betula is Latin for birch. I hope that it is pronounced like “Petula” rather than “spatula”. I also hope it doesn’t actually turn out to be Latin for “buffoon” or something.

(I realise that using a Latin version of your surname as an alias is the sort of thing that trips up the villain in an Agatha Christie novel, the villain's hubris making it impossible for him not to flaunt a clue in the faces of the plodding police, having reckoned without Hercule Poirot - Sorry.)

I hope you like my music. The songs: “Particle”, “Epicycle 5”, and “Time For One More Error” are from my first collection of songs, called “Dawn of a Brand New Error”. The title is a reference to (i.e. nicked from) a short story called "Working in the Spaceship Yards" by Brian Aldiss. The songs “Repetition is Boring”, “Aberrant State of Consciousness” and “David and Brian go to the Goth Party” are from my second collection of songs called “Repetition is Death Part II”. The title “David and Brian go to the Goth Party” is a reference to the repeated taunts of my friend Stephen Fall. Although the term "genius" is over used, misused and abused, it is, in his case, barely adequate. I do sometimes get fed up with his taunts though.

The songs “Repetition is Boring” and “Drum Song” were inspired by the witty and illuminating comments of Paula Mitchell, who makes brilliant music and used to work in the Tape Library at the same place I used to work.

“Drum Song” isn’t included here. I have quite an extensive backlog, so in that sense I’m a bit like The Artist Formerly Known As Prince. Except taller and much less successful with girls.

Much, much, much, much, much, less successful.

P.S. There are more of my songs on the site below. (This was my original MySpace site which I thought hadn’t come into existence but now suddenly has.)

Iris is in all of the pictures in our MP3 player though, apart from "David and Brian go to the Goth Party", which has a picture of Harriet. If you'd like to see more pictures of Gloria and her pals, please visit Gloria's MySpace site.

ICE CREAM FOR QUO!

Hello,I thought I'd do my totally inadequate best to promote my friend Stephen's music fanzine; "ICE CREAM FOR QUO". It's brilliant, and it's FREE! It doesn't have anything much to do with Status Quo,...
