In May of 2007 I received devastating news. My mother, Margaret was diagnosed with stage four Ovarian cancer. Every morning since she began treatment, Margaret wakes to continue her fight to live a "normal" life. Everyday she pushes through the pain and the fatigue of her treatment to live her life to the fullest. Because of my mother, I have a better understanding of the day to day needs of those afflicted with cancer.
Inspired by my mother's impervious strength, I conceived the idea of forming an organization to bring smiles to others afflicted with this disease. The goal of Creating Smiles For Hope, at this time, is to bring optimism and smiles to cancer patients with one small gesture at a time.
*** Coloring books and crafts for children's cancer wards
*** Stuffed animals for a child to hold onto during scary procedures
*** Books and magazines to read during lengthy chemotherapy sessions
*** CD's to distract a patient during difficult treatments
*** Pretty scarves and baseball caps to brighten a look in a mirror
These are just a few of the things that Creating Smiles For Hope plans to provide. A smile will accompany every gift!
Through Creating Smiles For Hope, I look forward to creating a smile for as many people as possible whose lives have been interrupted by cancer. This organization has already gained the support and enthusiasm of my family, friends and community, but there is still a long way to go. I have visited cancer treatment centers and hospitals, bringing small gifts and good wishes. I know first hand that the need exists. In the future Creating Smiles For Hope will provide assistance with co-pays and prescription costs.
The goal of Creating Smiles For Hope is to inspire others to join in the realization of this effort to create smiles. This cannot be done by one person alone. I will solicit help from friends, family and our community. There will be fund raising events. Donations, in whatever form offered, will be gratefully accepted! I encourage suggestions and will embrace all the help I can get!
An encouraging word can transform despair. One smile can change a painful moment. The offer of understanding and kindness can inspire hope. With Creating Smiles For Hope, I think we can do all that and more!
Smile,
Rosemary Mikla
