Anette von Eichel

About Me

Jazz is a language, the voice its first instrument. The voice can build bridges between the melodic texture and the story that each song wants to tell, it is performing the musical dialogue in itself and whoever sings should have something to tell. Anette von Eichel’s voice is extraordinary in many aspects: low and throaty, showing a warm timbre, powerful and to the point, clear and transparent in the higher registers. Her singing and her musicianship includes writing lyrics and songs. Anette von Eichel is vocalising classics of contemporary Jazz as Kenny Whellers Foxy Trot (on the legendary LP „WW“ on ECM), plays originals of herself and her fellow musicians, gives each musician in her band a lot of space and develops it with them. Her vocal improvisations are expressiv and demanding, the sound of the band is strong yet at times transparent. The latest CD of the band „Get Out Now“ was featured in the series „Next Generation“ of the German Jazz magazine „Jazzthing“.The british pianist John Taylor in his linernotes for „Get Out Now“:Anette von Eichel uses her attractive and flexible voice to good effect on this imaginative selection of contemporary pieces. She has successfully integrated her instrument within a group of good soloists who are all given an opportunity to show their individuality. The arrangements are thoughtful and Anette's own compositions and lyrics add a distinctive touch to the recording. The range of the material - from the intimacy of 'Mediation' to the challenging 'Foxy Trot' demonstrate the versatility of the band and the musical goals to which they aspire."Anette’s newest project is the Cologne based quartet with trumpetplayer Matthias Schriefl, Deujazz. Deujazz presents old-school German swing hits in an entirely new, anarchistic guise, which meets the particular magic spell radiating from the music in a most surprising way. The lyrics merge ironic allusions and double entendre with a plea for peace and freedom. Along with the melodies emerges a stirring emotional force: charming, solemn, gloomy at times, fresh and bold – though authentic and natural all along. Now and then the singer uses her voice like an instrument. The trumpet-player creates chordal harmonies by using various plungers as well as playing the melodica, flugelhorn and bariton horn. A sensational rhythm section constantly creates a solid yet demanding fundament for both of the soloists. Since the days of Ella Fitzgerald and Lance Armstrong there has been nothing compared to deujazz: its brilliant musical dialogue of man and woman, human voice and trumpet, melancholy and cheekiness. You will be inclined to think that the music has been composed only yesterday especially for these both technically brilliant and creatively distinct artists. Right from the beginning the atmosphere is so highly fascinating that after the last song you’ll be asking in amazement: is it over already?Press"Anette von Eichel has something that only a few singers can cl.. a personal artistic profil and a voice you won’t mix up with anybody else. This voice has a natural beauty that you seldomly see." (Rhein-Pfalz, April 2005)"An Intonation of seldomly heard transparency, her own lyrics and a very personal swing feeling are the trumpcards that strike from bar one. Music-check: very good!“ (Stereo, Mai 2004)"Anette von Eichel’s characteristic and flexible voice combines warmth and clear intonation, transparency and expression. The voice is integrated as an instrument in her band that finds a homogenious and transparent unity of sound in improvising interaction.“ (Jazzpodium, Oktober 2004)"A lot of tension and release. Art that needs no styling. 'Get Out Now' is the titel of Anette von Eichel’s new CD, and indeed this is a coming out!" (KStA, Juni 2004)
