There are cities much older than Herceg-Novi. There are more beautiful and luxurious locations. There are cities that we might long for, as something clandestine, unattainable, unreachable... However, there is no city so easy to belong to as HERCEG NOVI !ŽANJIC South from Rose, 3.8 nautical miles from Herceg Novi, set among old olive groves, there is the attractive cove called Žanjice. A vast beach of white pebbles, protected from the winds by the Arza cape, it is almost 300 m long and 10–15 m wide. In summer, this most popular excursion site on the Herceg Novi Riviera, welcomes almost 1,000 visitors.BLUE CAVE It is one of the most attractive in the series of caves located on the Luštica Peninsula and is situated between the of Zlatna luka Cove and the Mokra gora Cape. It is 5.7 nautical miles away from Herceg Novi. It has two openings at 45 degrees angles; the height from the sea level to the top of the ceiling is 9 m, and the depth is 3-4 m. Its name comes from the unusual blue color during the sunny days, due to sun rays reflecting off of the surface of the sea. It is a must see as a part of one’s tour around the Bay of Kotor.MIRIŠTE This small cove is an inseparable part of the Žanjic Cove. It is located between the Žanjic cove and the Arza Cape, in front of which there is the Islet of Our Lady with a renovated medieval church of Our Blessed Lady. On the very cape there is a fortress which was built by the Romans in order to control the entrance to the Bay.MAMULA ISLAND It is known on the sea maps as the Lastavica Island. It acquired its widely accepted name “Mamula†after the Austrian general Lazar Mamula who fortified it in the mid 19th century. Mamula is an uninhabited island located at the entrance to the Bay of Kotor, 3.4 nm from Herceg Novi. It is circular, 200 m in diameter. It is covered with low vegetation, it has a beach and a dock on its Northern side. During the both World Wars, there was a prison on the island and nowadays there is a commemorative inscription reminiscent of that period. There have been several projects made for the revival and tourist valorization of this very attractive island, none of which have been carried out thus far. Mamula continues to be an abandoned island, but also a favorite summer getaway.ROSE Located on the northwestern shore of the Luštica Peninsula, across from Herceg Novi, from which it is 1.7 nautical miles away. Long ago, this location was the residence of the old Greek settlement Porto Rose, which was destroyed by Saracens in the 9th century and was brought to an end by numerous earthquakes. It is a typical Mediterranean town with closely packed houses and aligned at the marina in front, well protected from the winds. This place is well endowed with vegetation comprising cypresses, pine trees, olive groves, oak trees, oleanders, laurel trees and “makija†scrub brush. North from the marina, there is a beautiful, tiny sandy beach surrounded by shade-creating olive trees commonly called LITTLE ROSE. Homes in this area have some 100 beds at their disposal for tourism purposes and half of them are in apartments.BORIĆI By car or on foot, 14 km from Herceg Novi, at the height of 850 meters, one can arrive to a mountain house »BORIĆI«, which has some 20 beds and offers a magnificent view of the Bay of Kotor.ORJEN Orjen is the highest mountain on the Adriatic coast (1,895 m), covering an area of 403.9 km2. Its basic climatic characteristics are: enormous quantity of precipitation and a lasting snow cover. Crkvice has almost 5000 mm on the average per year, which qualifies to be a location with the greatest quantity of precipitation in Europe. The snow is greater than 30 cm and it subsists from 30 to 120 days throughout the year. The four areas of this mountain are: ZUBAČKI UBLI, THE VRBANJ AREA (with the best, and somewhat affirmed, ski terrains of SUBRA, with the inn »ALPINA«), THE CRKVICE AREA and the area of BIJELA GORA (with the greatest snow cover). Apart from its speleological appeal, Orjen is especially interesting for its endemic flora, and it is no wonder that Orjen has been called the » century landmark« since it is known for its plentiful historic attractions testified by remains of Austro-Hungarian fortresses. Even in 1895, the highest peak of Orjen, ZUBAČKI KABAO, has a good quality footpath (PATH OF VAREŠANIN). In recent time, Orjen has been known for a great number of its marked and unmarked footpaths which, we recommend, should not be taken without a guide.
