In 2008 we had many effective events and membership grew substantially; Albertans respond passionately when being informed about the total scam that is nuclear power. DR. HELEN CALDICOTT WAS IN CALGARY TO SPEAK ON THE NUCLEAR INDUSTRY - Oct 7, 2008 at 7:00pm, at MacEwan Hall, University of Calgary!
Watch our website www.nuclearfreealberta.ca for information about nuclear power, planned events and how you can participate in informing Albertans about the economic, medical, environmental and political reasons that nuclear power is the worst of all options as we move into and beyond Peak Oil.
In November 2008 we officially changed our name to the "COALITION FOR A NUCLEAR FREE ALBERTA". It is our intent to fully inform the public across Alberta about why nuclear power is not the answer for Alberta energy needs. We would like as many members as possible to help spread the information and provide a large cohesive voice for the public on this issue. Please see our website at www.nuclearfreealberta.ca and become a member! Thanks!!!
WHO WE ARE: concerned and informed Alberta citizens!
The Coalition for a Nuclear Free Alberta is an Alberta coalition group formed to assure the Alberta public is made aware of plans to build nuclear reactors in Alberta and why nuclear energy is not a solution to Alberta energy needs. The alternative to Peak Oil is sustainable energy in combination with greatly increased energy efficiency! Nuclear energy is not the way of the future, it's a failed idea; unsafe, uneconomical, unreliable.
While most Albertans may not yet be aware of it, Bruce Power (a business partner of TransCanada, who wants to build a tranmission line to export electricity to California, a state with a moratorium on nuclear power) from Ontario has put forth plans to build four very large "first of a kind" ACR-1000 reactors near Peace River.
NUCLEAR ENERGY IS NOT SUITABLE FOR ALBERTA
Nuclear energy is unsafe, very uneconomical, unreliable and it guarantees that future generations will have very costly and dangerous nuclear waste to deal with. It is not a wise or ethical choice. It is a desperate industry in search of customers; it's concern is only on the very short term. It is an industry that consistently promises much but disappoints, with many massive cost over-runs and repeated leaks of radioactivity. Due to the fact that no insurance companies will cover nuclear risk, guarantees are typically made by the Canadian government whereby taxpayers rather than the corporation paying the bulk of cost over-runs and nuclear accident cleanups. It has proven itself the worst type of business arrangement Canada has ever experienced; 12% of Canada's national debt originates from AECL - Canada's nuclear power industry!
"Studies show each dollar invested in energy efficiency saves from five to seven times as much carbon dioxide as a dollar spent on nuclear" - Dr. Gordon Edwards, Canadian Council for Nuclear Responsibility
WORLDWIDE SHIFT TO ADOPTING SUSTAINABLE ENERGY
Nuclear power is not renewable, and is very damaging (mining and processing sites, reactor plants and nuclear wastes) and has always involved low reliability and outragious cost over-runs that tax payers get stuck with. The trend around the world is to move away from nuclear power and switch to clean sustainable energy, to increase efficiency in all energy use and to educate consumers so that they do their part to reduce consumption rates and adopt innovations such as more efficient light bulbs and by using efficient transportation, machines and appliances.
Human impact on the Earth's natural landscapes needs to be rebalanced in favor of a sustainable and healthy balance for all life and future generations.
Many countries around the world are choosing sustainable energy and deciding to close down nuclear as an option; countries such as Scotland, Spain, Italy and Germany. California has a moratorium on nuclear power. The United States has yet to resolve the nuclear disposal problem and has not built new reactors since 1978.
The United States is consistently one of the most deliberate and worst offenders when it comes to dealing with nuclear waste. The US uses DU (depleted uranium, U-238) in bullets and bombs and has used tons of it in the Iraq and area wars so far. The effect is to blanket spread nuclear waste radiation across entire regions. Soldiers and foreign citizens who get the subsequent cancers and illnesses, don't have far to look when it comes to understanding how they got sick.
Canada and Alberta must not agree to take nuclear waste from other countries like the US and France who have used nuclear power a great deal and yet still do not have solutions to long-term nuclear waste disposal.
A "green", healthy, safe, economical and reliable energy plan must be developed for Alberta. Alberta will not become a nuclear dumping ground. No country on Earth has yet found a successful method to dispose of nuclear wastes for hundreds of thousands of years. Quite to the contrary, the above-ground wastes in storage around the world have proven very costly to manage and remain very dangerous to store until long term solutions are found.

We welcome all Albertans to assist in educating the public about nuclear energy. To many Albertans in early 2008, nuclear energy is not yet perceived as an issue. However, those who are promoting nuclear as an option for Alberta have been active in Alberta for some time.
