I guess I'd start with my favourite fantasy book(s) the His Dark Materials trilogy. Simply wonderful stuff.
Another great read is Jonathan Strange & Mr Norell. Such a massive book and so detailed and realistic you can just get lost in there- just reread it, SOOO good.
Speaking of massive books, The Blind Assassin was brilliant. Read Salman Rushdie's Midnight's Children lately. Was amaaaaazing. Highly recommend it to everyone and anyone (especially if you like stories set in and around India).
I'm also very partial to a Terry Pratchett book but unfortunately have read all of the Discworld books so am just waiting for him to write another one. Fingersmith is another long, undulating story I really enjoyed even if it was a little incredible. Still, everyone loves a story with lesbians, right?hmm, nothing else comes to mind right now but i have read more than this!
