Fiona O'Brien

About Me

Guitar MySpace Backgrounds Singer/guitarist Fiona O'Brien has performed around Tasmania, the island state of Australia for over 30 years as a soloist and also in groups & duos. She started out as a gospel singer, and gradually expanded her repertoire to country, old time rock'n'roll, jazz, blues, folk and middle of the road music.
Popular around the north of the state for many years, Fiona re-located to southern Tassie nearly 5 years ago. After taking a very short break from music, she is finding new audiences around the Channel region and has had a few gigs on Bruny Island too!
Fiona's performed at all sorts of venues for all sorts of occasions: restaurants, cafes, pubs, clubs, halls, festivals, markets, fetes, schools, parks, gardens, nursing homes, hospitals, churches, town halls, community centres, weddings, funerals, conferences, rallies, parties, cabarets, concerts and probably heaps more!
Songwriting has been something Fiona has done sporadically, but an early gospel song (refer to the player) received quite a bit of airplay in Tassie & other states, and was a finalist a few years back in the Aust & NZ Songwriting awards. Fiona sometimes writes extra verses for covers, usually parodies. "I love deep and meaningful songs, but there's still room in the world for lightweight or funny songs as well!" say Fiona, who also writes poetry & prose both serious and humorous.
NEW CD OUT NOW !! 6 track cd titled "Shades Of Blue" contains 6 songs penned by Fiona, coincidentally all written this year. (2008) A preview of a couple of the songs are featured on the music player on this page: the blues influenced "Look Away", and a two perhaps reflectiing her country/folk experience: "Liar, Liar" and "Lazybones".! Anyway, the songs on the myspace music player will you an idea of Fiona's versatility, as "May The Lord Guide You" is from her country gospel album from 1999.
Currently one of the resident performers at
BROOKFIELD VINEYARD CAFE
in Margate, Tasmania (just south of Hobart), singing gentle lunch music accompanying herself on the guitar(which includes jazz, blues & soft country) most Saturdays and some Sundays. Fiona also hosts the monthly OPEN MIC NIGHT at Brookfield, featuring local and interstate performers, and where she is likely to sing ANY style: blues, comedy, rock, folk, jazz.
