About Me

“Tox” was born Tokunbo Obi in Passaic, New Jersey during the mid 80’s; a time period that helped to nurture Hip Hop music into the dominant genre that it is today. Tox was born into a unique style of family with a mother from a traditional Black American background and a father From Nigeria, West Africa. This Unique mixture allowed Tox to get a true “African-American” experience. Tox’s maternal grandparents embody the struggles of black people within this country. Gracious and Fannie King were born on farms in Georgia during the early 1920’s and witnessed first hand the hurt and devastation that ignorance and racism can lead to. They then became members of “the great migration” and moved up north to Passaic, New Jersey. Eventually through hard work and hustling they were able to become one of the first African American families to buy a home on Burgess pl, a well known block located uptown Passaic, New Jersey. It was this house and block that helped mold Tox into the person he is today. Growing up in Passaic, Tox was influenced by many of the positive as well as negative aspects of a typical urban environment. Tox’s parents were not rich but although he did not get everything he wanted, he always had everything he needed. Tox’s parents always stressed the value of a good education; and as soon as his parents were able to afford it, they snatched him out of the Passaic Public School system and placed him in private college prepatory schools. Starting with the The Colligate School from 7th-8th grade and then Seton Hall Prepatory School for grades 9-12, Tox was exposed to different cultures and views that showed him what life outside of urban America is like. Because of the high price tag on quality education in this country, Tox’s parents sacrificed a lot in order to send him to such prestigious schools. However, it was at these schools that Tox was first exposed to real wealth; not just the cars, clothes and jewelry that people in Passaic coveted, but real wealth, which provides for the livelihood of generations. Because of the sacrifices his family made and his exposure to people with great Wealth Tox has had high goals and aspirations since a very young age. Upon Graduating High school Tox continued his education at Howard University a prestigious predominantly African American college located in Washington DC. Howard University is unique because of the fusion of different cultures from all over the African Diaspora. It was here that Tox was exposed to the many different genres within Hip Hop music as a whole. The slow laid back style of Texas rappers, the dance happy style of Atlanta snap music, The Hype “Hyphe” style from the California Bay area, etc. It was at Howard that Tox realized how far reaching and influential Hip Hop music is and can grow to be. It became his plan to use hip hop music to spread his views on life, American society and the world as a whole. Hip Hop was always the only music Tox listened to and he and his friends would always pass the time by freestyling. So he decided to take it seriously and is currently working on making music that can inform, inspire and motivate people to make a change.----- RIP Grandma shout out to my grandpa they the couple on the right..
