April 19, 1968 behind the project walls known as "Brick City" in Cordele, Georgia….a star was born. Named Eric Keith Lowe at birth, the world of music and entertainment would come to know this phenomenon simply as SHABAZZ.
Born into an era when the Jackson 5 were on the verge of becoming the hottest band in the country, Shabazz and his mother moved to Philly, and it was evident early on that he too was an entertainer in his own right. Always put on the spot by his mother and her friends to "sing that song" or "do the robot like Michael Jackson did".
Although it probably wasn't known at the time, but his true niche was discovered when he was a mere five years old. TALKING!!!!! And no, not just learning to actually speak but talking to a degree where he could not only command, but also hold the attention of an audience with his exceptional verbal savvy. Did I mention that at times this audience was a group of Drexel University college students? Yeah the star had been born, but now it was beginning to illuminate.
Fast forward to age 16 when Shabazz discovered that he could put words together in rhyme fashion. Uh oh, now emerges the rapper. Known around his high school as Eazy-E (prior to the East Coast knowin about N W A) and at the local radio station where he was an intern, his lyrical skills earned him a weekly spot on a local hip hop show known as "Street Beat" with Lady B, where other mc's, including himself exhausted the final 10 minutes of the broadcast with their own individual freestyle rhymes. It was around this time that he was introduced to who would later become his mentor in the industry, Big Troy Shelton, who at the time worked very closely with guys we know today as icons; Russell Simmons, Rick Rubin, and Lyor Cohen. As his love for the art and industry grew, Shabazz navigated through the late 80's and early 90's creating alliances as well as friendships with the likes of Schoolly "D" , Charli Baltimore, Left Eye (rip), and the majority of Philly mc's that were relevant at that time.
