Bio: (in English)CARMINA BURANA was born in the Summer of 1983. The band blew its last breath ten years after. What happened in between was more or less like this...
During the summer of 1984, their first gigs in little pubs in Valencia and the different reactions of the audience who went to those gigs (some of them are today proud to tell they were there) made them already see that: the path through the ways of rock was not going to be easy for them.
January '85. Their first studio demo (a seedy studio) includes three songs, one of which, EL TELAR DE LA LOCURA, opened the doors of some of the most important specialised radio programmes of that time. The gigs follow one another and they went on earning experience and technique and drawing more audience each time. Moreover, the demo makes them contact Twins Productions, record company with which they record that summer their first EP, including the legendary EL TELAR DE LA LOCURA.
October '85. The lack of promotion, together with a long disease of the drummer and the strong romantic sense of the group, looking forward to his prompt recovery, make the performances of the following months to be scarce.
August '86. Despite the record has not made them achieve mass recognition and fame, at least it made possible the birth of a record company interested in issuing an album of the band. Their first LP is issued by PLATAFORMA DISCOS, with the production two great professionals, Jo Dworniak and Duncan Bridgeman, who have worked with Radio Futura, PIL, Haircut One Hundred, Paul McCartney, Transvision Vamp, Kiko Veneno, Jarabe de Palo, Nueva Trova Santiagueña... The result is called 'CARMINA BURANA'. The quality of the recording is great, the production is great, but the result is a bit different from the live sound of the group, actually a bit harder. Nevertheless, satisfaction is general.
December '86. By means of an agreement between MIDNIGHT MUSIC, a British recording company, and PLATAFORMA, the first one gets the rights for distributing the record all over Europe (except Spain) and North America. The only condition is that the songs must be sung in English. So, with the music already recorded, the vocals in English are added under the direction of Nick Ralph, head of MM, and at the beginning of 1987 the album 'THE APOCRYPHAL DANCES' is on sale.
Summer 1987. Poor selling for the album, due to a weak promotion, either in Spain (no more than 3000 copies sold) or abroad (no wonder, for there were only 200 copies of the album distributed in each country...) Yet the band was not in its best moment, since illness made their drummer to abandon the band once and for all. With this panorama and a lot of patience and constancy (maybe stubbornness), the three members of the band shut themselves up in the rehearsal room to work with their instruments and compose and prepare a new leap, the definitive one.
In October 1988 they started to perform live again and recorded a new demo “‘Pelotillas’ Jansenâ€. After a few months, a new drummer is recruited and another demo allows them to be heard again on the main radio programmes. A fearless new record company, TRIQUINOISE, comes to them. Trip to Berlin, their first international destination, in November ’90.
April 1991. Second album, also named “CARMINA BURANAâ€. Then, again a chance to go abroad, this time to Greece.
When they come back home, low sales rates for the new album, compulsory military service for one and another drummer who clears off.
Although they go on composing new material, after being cheated for the umpteenth time by a concert promoter, together with tiredness after ten years of unsuccessful work, Jose, the guitar player decides to give up. One last gig, in August 6, 1993 and the band decides to break up.
Where are they now?
Manolo Fernández played guitar and other stuff in Malasangre, a terrifying-destroyer-sound duo, between electronic music and after-punk electric chaos. After that, he was playing tangos as a guitarist in bands such as Los Mareados, with singer Cándida (see her myspace below) and Carlos Sanchis (now in Abracanalla). Then, after recording one song for a Zappa tribute CD, silence. Now, according to comments at his myspace (http://www.myspace.com/pandemen), still under construction, it seems that he is preparing something. We are eagerly looking forward to it.Andrés Blasco, while at his band Fitzcarraldo, became Dr. Truna, pataphysic, or just Truna. After several years in Belgium, where he founded the electro-acoustic duo King Kong, he returned to Valencia. Now he has a brand new project, Antorcha Amable (see myspace below), together with Begoña Tena. A delight for sensitive ears.About José C. PernÃas we just know that he parked his guitars and reoriented his passion towards University. Prof. PernÃas, our respects.Nota bene: This space has been created with love and respect by a micro-collective of Carmina Burana's devoted admirers. Long time has passed since the band dissolved in History, like a sugar cube in black coffee. It has not been an easy task to collect all the information. We have had to turn to the members of the band’s friends’ friends’ friends, some original documents have been retrieved, our own experience as admirers of these men has illustrated several parts of this biography and we have handed in to the internet web their music, which otherwise would have remained only in the minds of those who loved the art of this amazing band.
As a tribute.
