About Me
Laura Andel was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where she grew up. After living, studying, and performing in Argentina, she moved to Boston in 1993 to pursue studies in composition. Since then, she has focused mainly on composition for large ensembles and developing her own conducting as part of the compositional process. In 2000, Ms. Andel moved to New York City where she created the Laura Andel Orchestra, a large ensemble that features an unusual combination of instruments and unites musicians from diverse musical and cultural backgrounds that perform Andel's extended compositions.Laura Andel has received several grants, commissions, and awards for her work from BMI Foundation, Jerome Foundation, Unesco-Aschberg, Rockefeller Foundation, American Music Center, Massachusetts Cultural Council, New York State Music Fund, Roulette Intermedium, The Kitchen, and the Senate for Culture of the City of Berlin. She has also been a composer fellow at several artist residencies such as Bellagio (Italy), Sacatar (Brazil), Valparaiso (Spain), and in the USA at Yaddo, MacDowell, Music Omi, Blue Mountain Center, and Ucross Foundation.Currently, she leads the Laura Andel Orchestra in several formations. Among the most recent are the 14-piece SomnambulisT Orchestra, the 10-piece Electric Percussive Orchestra, and now a new 9-piece format of the Laura Andel Orchestra, which includes bandoneon, piano, Fender Rhodes, double bass, cornet, clarinets, viola, vibraphone, and Gamelan instruments. SomnambulisT, her first extended work, was released by Red Toucan Records in 2003. In::Tension:., her second extended work, was released by Rossbin Records in 2005.
