Zig Ziglar said, "success
can't be bought outright. It is bought on an installment plan
and paid for daily."
How true that is. I don't know how many times I've fallen for
some new way to do something, to be successful and go out there and do
alright in the beginning, then fall apart.
Finally, I've been able to figure it all out. Well, maybe not
all .
Someone is always
talking about cracking the code and then wanting to sell you on their
new way. Well, I've tried a lot of ways and spent a lot of money .
They told me it was an investment, and, don't get me wrong, I
believe it was. I
learned many things and now that I've cracked the code, it's all coming
together. I love it!
The wants that I thought were goals
are now being realized.
My search for success took a long time. If it were a journey
down
a path, I found many dead ends and had to track my way back. Not
exactly the way you want to spend almost 10 years and thousands of
dollars.
Well, enough generalities, let me tell you a little about me.
My first decision
was to do what I loved. This happened in university.
I
remember being asked what I was studying, and this is my first
insight: I told them history. Now the insight: "What in the
world
can you do with history?" This was asked by family members,
friends, and even strangers. My original - and true - answer
was
that I loved history and wanted to learn more. Education is
just
that, for you to learn more, not land a job. That's what post
grad is for. That's what resumes are for. I then found out
that
you could land a ton of different jobs or professions, and no, not just
teaching!
After exhausting these on people, and naively believing
I was opening their eyes, I stopped. I came to my next
realization, and this because of martial arts. They would
still believe what they wanted to believe.
I am a huge Bruce Lee fan. Yes he can kick butt!
However,
he also is huge on introspection, truly looking at yourself.
He said something like this. If I am unprepared then I worry
about the opponent in front of me. But if I am prepared and I
am
truly not worried, then I treat it like today it's raining but tomorrow
the sun is going to come out.
Adversity is all in what you make of it. If you are prepared,
then you don't need to worry. You just keep on living.
So, I decided early to do what I enjoyed and to ignore the negative
comments of others. I found no need to defend myself.
On top of this, I found religion. Well, that may be a bit off
center. I was always religious, but I decided in my beliefs,
and
was once again questioned about my choice, but never looked back.
With that I learned that as long as you are doing right
things
then you never need to defend yourself. Be good and you'll be
free.
Well, up to that point I was on track. I met a wonderful
young
lady, proposed and started thinking about the future. Soon
after,
though, I
began to listen to the talk around me. You need a job to
provide for a family. You can't make enough money doing
that....
On and on it went. I gave in. I found a job.
I joined the army as an officer. Kinda got the
smooth talk
to enroll and found out later that it wasn't what it was supposed to be
and got out.
When I came home I found a sales job, sort of. I started out
as a
delivery/assembly person for fitness equipment. The manager,
now
a great friend, gave me some pointers, referred me to good books,
helped meet some the the successful people in the industry, where I
learned about the importance of good books and constant learning.
Soon, I was doing sales, and I was liking it. Weird
isn't
it? The picture I had of sales people was not a good one.
Here's what I learned, if you are doing what you're doing
just to
make a buck, then you should be looked at as a piece of slug slime.
If you are truly trying to help people with your product or
service, and they are looking for it, then you are definitely in the
right place doing the right thing.
Here's the secret. You can get
everything you want if you'll help
enough other people get what they want. Zig's
the man!
Well, I've also learned that to be successful, you need to be ready for
opportunities that come along. One came along and I did it
again.
I let family and friends talk me out of it. Even
when I had
people telling me that I'd be good if not great at it. I
really
felt silly when I spoke to my uncle about it and he laid it all in
front of me, black and white.
He told me that I shouldn't
listen to people who don't know what they're talking about when it
comes to success. He asked me why I would listen to someone
who
is a disgruntled employee that works so that they can have a day off to
complain about work while golfing or fishing or going out somewhere.
I didn't have an answer and I knew what was coming next.
But I needed
to hear it. If you wanted to learn
how to
become a millionaire, would you talk with someone living on the streets
or find a millionaire? So I sat there with my
tail between my
legs and grinning like an idiot, all in the vain attempt to look like I
wasn't disappointed in my choice. I think he saw through it
because he stopped and we talked about other things, including learning
from mistakes.
After that I set my sights on being a police officer. It
seemed
to be the right thing for family and friends. It paid well
and
had great benefits. It would be a changing environment
everyday,
which was a must for me. And I'd be able to help people.
Well, did I go in with my eyes wide shut or what. I
don't
think I've helped that many people. I know that I preserve
the
peace and I am willing to lay it on the line to protect people, but
helping is few and far between.
As a police officer I also looked for some business opportunities to
work on my time off. Jim Rohn put it nicely when he said, I
am
working full-time on my income and part-time on my wealth.
Needless to say, the first opportunity flopped. The
second,
which cost me almost 3 grand, taught me plenty but has earned me only a
little. I learned some neat things and
could probably use some but never found the chance. Not yet
anyway.
I was and am still a good magician. So, I started
doing shows. I don't know why but everytime I started to make
some ground I put it on cruise control. Problem was, there
was no
cruise control set up. Back to zero. I'd rev it up
again,
and cruise right back to zero.
Now I'm with a new company and have finally figured it out.
It's
awesome. The best thing is that a lot of it has to do with
mindset. The pros are right, you have to dream it, think it, plan
it and act. If you want it bad enough, you'll get it.
But
be careful what you wish for. There must be balance or you
will
set yourself up for significant failure. Finally, the time is
right. Everything I've done has prepared me for now and it is
wonderful!
So, why am I setting up an account here? I am looking for
like
minded people. I am also looking for ... you know what?
I
will fill you in with my section on people I want to meet.
See you there.
