Kevin Nelson

Born in 1976, to a brilliant auto mechanic (don't know any other ones that had a four year scholarship to Brown University) and an artistic, sometimes eccentric housewife, my earliest memories include hearing my mother's large record player as it played in the livingroom, or sitting in the car with my father as Elton John, Billy Joel, and others came on the radio. We would sit in that car waiting for my sister and mother to finish shopping for clothes at those little clothing stores in downtown Milford that no longer exsist, and I can remember the energy of the music and powerful lyrics that accompanied it. I knew then, even at an early age, that good music and meaningful lyrics were precious, and could be adopted by the listener as another part of the "Soundtrack" to their life. As I grew older, I began to listen to music even more, and could find songs from almost every genre that I liked. It was 1998, when I stopped-in to a small family restaurant in Woonsocket, RI with a friend, where they were hosting karaoke that night, and picked-up a microphone for the first time. After belting-out a few songs by Garth Brooks, I knew I had found something else to be passionate about.... singing. This would be the very same place I would meet my daughter's mother, a year later...For another year or two, I was the biggest karaoke junky you'll find, going to every place in a 20 mile radius that hosted it. Early on, I was well received, and honestly- felt like local karaoke "royalty" among fellow singers. But as with anything else, when the same group gets used-to something, reaction dwindles and it becomes harder to impress. Eventually, with the new challenges of marriage and starting a family, nights out to sing became fewer and farther between. Despite the new responsibilities, I was able to not only perform at Woonsocket's Annual Autumnfest Talent Show, but honored to place in the top 5 for the Amateur category four times, and 6th place twice over the seven years between 1999 and 2005. In 2006 it was off to another location in Johnston,RI where my friend, DJ RayRay, was working the karaoke every wednesday night. It was here that I met fellow "K2" member and good friend- Kevin Candora. And now, it's 2008. I'm now a single father with even more challenges, but my love for music and singing remains. I continue to work hard at perfecting my versions of songs that I like. Part of this is listening to them over and over until I know every lyric and every beat by heart. Unfortunately, though I can play some things by ear- for some reason I was always intimidated by sheet music, and to this day would rather learn chinese than those silly dots.
