About Me

Middle-aged librarian, but my hair is too short to wear in an bun. Conforming to stereotype, I do have a cat.

My Interests

I read constantly; I spend way too much time and money on listening to music, both live and recorded; I'm an obsessed genealogist; I have web pages that I wish I could spend more time on; I like to go places; I like museums of all kinds; I like things with engines.

I'd like to meet:

Interesting people with inquiring minds. I'd love to meet people my age who are interested in new music.

Music:

A whole lot of stuff, but primarily rock, alt-country, folk, blues. I had a list here, but it got too ridiculously long. I buy mostly used cds so it's a matter of luck what I get. I see mostly local bands or a national playing locally that I can afford. Oh well, support local music!

Movies:

I like movies (who doesn't?), but I'm not a big buff. I do really like cartoons.

Television:

I don't watch or own a tv.

Books:

Aagh -- way too much. Science fiction and fantasy, mysteries, history (especially the American South and the frontier), natural history. I spend a lot of time on LibraryThing finding more books to read.

Heroes:

Heard of Nellie Bly? I'd like to be that intrepid.

My Blog

Currently reading...

I'm trying to read a bunch of stuff on the history of "right here", the area where I live.  My brain already feels like a Thanksgiving turkey.  There is so much history out there!

Hippo eats dwarf...

No, not really, but it's an amusing and interesting book.  It also demonstrates repeatedly that cynicism is a survival trait.  Recommended.

... Wish I'd had a class with this guy.  David Goldfield , that is, of UNC Charlotte, author of the posted book.

More books, more music

In the past week I've read two great books and acquired two more Dave Childers albums.  I wish I had lots of money so I could devote all my time to books and music.  The books are: Riding wi...

All about the computer

Just when did our computers become so central to our lives?  I came home Wednesday night to find my computer had crashed.  I was devastated!  For the next 24 hours I kept starting towar...

Brainiacs

Oh boy, yet another subculure.  This is the world of people who compete in quiz bowls and on Jeopardy.  It's interesting to read, funny in places, and this Ken Jennings guy comes across as a...

poor rat

I stayed up late to finish the rat book.  Poor rat. It's very sad. By the way, he hates "cute rats" like Mickey Mouse.

there's a rat in a bookstore

He's very well read.  This makes his life difficult in some ways.  Read it.

The Truckstop Preachers covered a song from this album last night so I had to dig it out and refresh my memory.  Ween is amusing!
