I AM MY MUSIC – AND MY MUSIC IS WHO I AMI’m a lyricist and aspiring music producer. I’m currently 17 and have been writing original lyrics and arranging beats and music for nearly seven years. If you were to take the defiance of Eminem, lyrical poetry and perspective of the world from KRS One, Chuck D, Mos Def and Marvin Gaye, crossed with the music of Motown, Dr. Dre, Public Enemy and Moby you’ll start to understand who I am as a musician. I'm working on two full length CDs, one is rap and the other is instrumental. Look for a fall release and be sure to leave some space on your iPods for my songs.
IT'S ON MY TERMS - NOT YOURSWhether I'm making music or hanging with my family and friends, I enjoy life to the fullest but I do it on my terms. I don’t change who I am because someone thinks I should look or act a certain way. In other words, just because I create beats for rap artists and create my own rap songs doesn't mean I need to act or look like I'm a gangsta. Same can be said for my instrumental music. Just because some of my music is compared to Moby and he's one of my musical influences, doesn't mean I should shave my head and become a vegetarian.
KEEP IT REALI don’t believe someone should strip down their personality and character to just fit in. I do my best to stay away from the hate and bullshit drama that seems to engulf Hip Hop and rap. So much of rap music today seems to be about hate and drama which influences how so many people my age choose to act. This is one of the reasons I wrote the song "Be Ya-self". The song's a message to people, especially kids my age, that if you want to keep it "real" be true to yourself and not act like some glammed up gangster in a video.
JUDGE MY MUSIC – NOT MEIf you don’t like my style of music that’s cool, it’s not for everyone. Nobody says you have to listen to it. But don’t just look at me and see the color of my skin and immediately think the music is shit or I’m some kind of poser cause I'm white. Listen to the lyrics in my songs. Can you relate to what I’m saying? Listen to the beats. Do they hit? Is the music unique? If you are going to listen to my music all I ask is that you judge it on its own merit.
KNOW YOUR HISTORY BEFORE YOU SPEAKEven though I might not like where rap is today I don't believe it's dead. It's just mishandled. Kids my age think that rap and the Hip Hop culture is about how gangsta you are. Know your history before you speak. The true message of Hip Hop is that it's an art-form, a culture, that invites all races and ages to join. Hip Hop gives us a platform to express ourselves, our feelings and viewpoint without censorship --- no matter the color of your skin, where you're from or what you look like.
SPREAD THE WORDSo if you like what I'm saying in my music, or if you like the beats, turn up the volume and spread the word to your friends.Peace.
