Chapter One:The beginning of another history. Like the Green Post (myspace.com/thegreenpost), The Changing is yet another band from the past that was active from 1988 to 1992 in the San Francisco bay area. Based in Alameda during those years, The Changing recorded a number of songs, some of which will be uploaded in the near future, played in many local clubs-many of which are no longer in existence-and were briefly on a local record label called Epithet based in Stanford, California. They also managed to get an interesting fan base in Germany where during 1989 and 1990 many of their early recordings and demos were played on the radio. The Changing had a bit of a difficulty holding down drummers and in the four years they were active there were three who filled the post as well as one drum machine. As is the case with many bands, members had different ideas about where to take the music, not to mention struggling with music that was both interesting, but which had potential to be played on the radio. In 1992 The Changing didn't really "call it quits" but drifted into a number of other projects, mindsets and life choices.
High school friends Chris Connolly and Garrett Brown formed the basis of a working musical unit, with Chris on keyboards, drum machine programming and voice, while Garrett would switch on and off with guitar and bass. Early recordings were done on boom boxes with condenser microphones and were primitive both in sound and musical structure. But, within that framework, there was a strong sense of direction. Both Chris and Garrett listened to bands that were loosely related, some of those being Dead Can Dance, particularly the 1st album, New Model Army as well as a host of others. In the fall of 1988, Chris and Garrett came to the conclusion that they wanted to work with a guitarist as Garrett seemed to be focusing more on bass lines. Chris knew of a schoolmate who played guitar and keyboards. His name was David Baker. He had formed a band in high school called Death Of Simon, which had recently split up after playing for only about a year in 1987 due to internal conflict amongst the members. David seemed to fit in with Chris and Garrett. The three of them would spend their weekends together writing songs and in November, 1988 they performed their first live show at a now defunct dance club in Alameda called The Twilight Zone. Whether the show was a success or not remains arguable, what was evident, however, was the fact that Chris, Garret and David had formed a strong bond and enjoyed creating and performing music together.
