Koryo Gumdo is a sword fighting art practiced by the Korean people for over 2000 years. "Koryo Gumdo," translates to "Way of the Korean Sword." The people that studied this art were called "Samurang," which means "To Serve." This was an ideal that Samurang dedicated thier life to. Usually serving as a bodyguard to a person or politician in a position of power, or serving a certain way of life. Whatever the choice, a Samurang strived for perfection in leading this way of life. Armed with a "Jin Gum," a Samurang trained everyday for countless hours in thier quests for perfection. A "Jin Gum," or "Sword," is a curved bladed single edged sword that is maded for slicing and dicing style cutting. It's about 38" long, full tang, complete with a traditionally wrapped handle and pinned twice for stabillity and durabillity. A hand guard was also made. Usually resembing a leaf. This symbolizes the four seasons and the change that comes with each season. Change is a part of all our lives and a Samurang was dedicated to his way of life. No matter what the change. Samurang flow with the winds of change but stay strong in thier ideals. Most of us refer to this as "The Way," This made the Jin Gum a neccessary and almost religious part of Samurang life. Many believed that one's soul became part of the sword, making Samurang honorable and fierce warriors. If need be. However, the ability to use the sword is very small in the broad picture of living the way to the Samurang. Life was more about striving for perfection in all things. Samurang were respected and sometimes feared. It was a hard life but full of rewards. At least to those gave themselves to "The Way." Today Koryo Gumdo is taught much the same way. Philosophy and sword work are a huge part of the art, but living "The Way," and building better people are the main focus.
