Joe Stroud is probably someone that you’ve seen around… He has been playing in and around Melbourne since he was 16, in both acoustic duos and bands everywhere from the Aztec Bar and Ruby’s Lounge, to the Espy, the Barley Corn and Sine.
Born with a severe hearing impairment, he would constantly sing only hearing the voice in his head, ‘I didn’t even know what songs were on the radio… I could hear John Farnham because he sang loud enough to get in to my head’. An operation when he was 8 years old saved his hearing, ‘and for the first time I could actually HEAR my own voice – I became completely obsessed with it!’
After having his nose to the grind for 7 years in the Melbourne music scene, Joe decided that he needed some time off and took 2 years to focus on his other love, acting.
Now, after a 2 year hiatus from playing live music he has emerged as the band leader of Mojo’s Marching Band.
Playing his own brand of soulful music – the kind that is equally as emotive as it is flamboyant; Mojo’s Marching Band is quickly winning over fans everywhere. Drawing influence from musicians such as Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Buckley, Stevie Wonder and John Mayer, MMB is an experience to be heard, a truly unique blend of electric guitars, didgeridoo and vocals. It is both soulful and bluesy, yet not too shameful to get your toes tapping or get stuck in your head for the rest of the day.
Making the band a whole are James Vihtelic (bass), Matt Morgan (guitar) and Nick Jackson (drums).
Playing gigs around Melbourne, and competing in the Melbourne Fresh Industry Showcase grand final, Mojo’s Marching Band are quickly gaining a reputation as a band to watch!
