Il gruppo nasce nel 1980 per rappresentare l'espressione della tradizione del passato medioevale della Città di Viterbo.
La particolarità di un gruppo rigorosamente femminile, per quanto riguarda “il gioco†delle bandiere, è sorta dalla volontà del Comitato Centro Storico Viterbo, impegnato nel mantenere vivo nei bambini e ragazzi la tradizione Viterbese dei “facchini†che trasportano sulle spalle la Macchina di S. Rosa, di creare un'attività specifica per le ragazze nell'ambito delle nostre tradizioni medioevali.
Per anni le "Sbandieratrici" sono state l'unico gruppo italiano formato interamente da ragazze che si cimentavano nel gioco della bandiera e nell'accompagnamento ritmato dei tamburi.
Oggi si intende mantenere questa caratteristica solo per le Sbandieratrici, mentre le tamburine, alle quali si sono aggiunte le chiarine, si sono trasformate da alcuni anni in "Gruppo Storico Musicale" formato da ragazzi e ragazze.
Nel 2001 il Comitato Centro Storico Viterbo ha iniziato il completamento del gruppo inserendo dei figuranti, che ricordano i Signori, i Popolani, gli armigeri rappresentanti le due fazioni cittadine protagonisti della vita cittadina del 1200.
Il gruppo “Le Sbandieratrici e Gruppo Storico Musicale Città di Viterbo†ha conquistato l'ammirazione degli spettatori di diverse piazze della provincia Viterbese e ha partecipato a Manifestazioni Interregionali e Nazionali d'Italia.
Ogni volta è stata l'occasione per mostrare il leone e la palma, simboli della città di Viterbo e delle sue passate glorie di storia medioevale.
Dal 2004 il gruppo “Le Sbandieratrici e Gruppo Storico Musicale Città di Viterbo†è aderente della Lega Italiana Sbandieratori (L.I.S), Associazione nazionale che ha per scopo la valorizzazione delle tradizioni storiche, culturali e spettacolari delle Compagnie, far conoscere e difendere il patrimonio culturale, storico ed artistico, mantenere la buona armonia fra le Compagnie stesse, la promozione e l’organizzazione di Manifestazioni Nazionali e Internazionali. Evento Nazionale della L.I.S. è “La parata Nazionale della Bandieraâ€, una tre giorni di sfilate ed esibizioni.
Il costume delle Sbandieratrici, dei Musici e dei Figuranti, si attiene alla tradizione del medioevo, ed è una sintesi degli abiti che erano in uso nel secolo tredicesimo.
La bandiera, invece, esprime la singolarità e l'evidenza dell'autonomia territoriale, con i suoi colori giallo e blu.
Da alcuni anni, anche la serata del 2 settembre vede protagonista il gruppo con l'esibizione della "Contesa", una rappresentazione che ricorda la vicenda epica dell'assedio alla città avvenuta nel 1243, e la lotta tra i guelfi di Papa Innocenzo IV e i Ghibellini dell'imperatore Federico II di Svevia.

The group is born in 1980 in order to represent the expression of the tradition of the medioevale past of the City of Viterbo.
The particularitity of a rigorously feminine group, as far as "the game" of the flags, is risen from the will of the Committee Historical Center Viterbo, engaged in alive maintaining in the children and boys the Viterbese tradition of "facchini" that they transport on the shoulders the Machine of S. Rosa, creating a specific activity for the girls in the within of our medieval traditions.
For years the "Sbandieratrici" has been the only formed Italian group entire from girls who attempted in the game of the flag and the rhytmich accompanyment of the drums.
Today one agrees to maintain to this single characteristic for the Sbandieratrici, while the Drummers female, to which the chiarine have joined, they have transformed from some years in "Musical Historical Group" format from boys and girls.
In the 2001 Committee Historical Center Viterbo it has begun the completion of the group inserting of figuring, that the Getlteman remember, the Canters, the armed representatives the two city factions protagonists of the city life of 1200.
The group "the Sbandieratrici and Historical Group Musical City of Viterbo" has conquered the admiration of the spectators of various public squares of the Viterbese province and has participated to Interregional and National Manifestations of Italy.
Every time has been the occasion in order to show the lion and the palm, symbols of the city of Viterbo and its passages medieval history glories.
From the 2004 group "the Sbandieratrici and Historical Group Musical City of Viterbo" is adherent of the Italian Alloy Sbandieratori (L.I.S), national Association that has for scope the valorization of the historical traditions, cultural and spectacular of the Companies, to introduce and to defend the cultural patrimony, historical and artistic, to maintain the good harmony between the same Companies, the promotion and the organization of National and International Manifestations. National event of the L.I.S. it is "the National parade of the Flag", three days of paraded and exhibitions.
The custom of the Sbandieratrici, the Drummers and Figuring, is adhered to the tradition of the Middle Ages, and is a synthesis of the dresses that were in use in the century thirteenth.
The flag, instead, expresses the singolarit and the evidence of the territorial autonomy, with its yellow and blue colors.
From some years, also the evening of the 2 september sees protagonist the group with the exhibition of the "Contesa", a rappresentation that the epic vicissitude remembers of besieges to the city happened in 1243, and the fight between guelfi of Pope Innocenzo IV and the Ghibellines of the emperor Federico II of Svevia.
