Listen to the music. Read the story:I admit it doesn’t sound original at first blush.

Rock stars who never made it, but managed to recover from drugs and god-knows-what-else. Yeah. We all think our story would make a compelling book.

But maybe this one does. There is, after all, depth, lots of humor, and more than a fair share of gut-wrenching pathos in the book Becoming Scraping 101 that reads like a novel. For instance:

• Late nights in a major LA studio, playing till our fingers blistered, while men in drag with breast implants strutted outside for tricks.

• The mugger — for fun, we dressed in clown suits for that night’s walk — and the Ecuadorian gang that dug our clown suits and protected us from then on.

• My co-author’s agonizing multiple personality disorder that drove him to carve deep into his abdomen with a razor to “bleed out his ex-girlfriend.”

• My obsession with suicide — and the drug abuse that didn’t help.

• The two lonely, desperate, small-town kids we were, huddled and frightened in LA’s seedy version of the real world.

On its surface, I suppose one might dismiss this as another coming-of-age story.

But it’s more. It’s an honest account of two teens with big dreams, from awful circumstances, who were damned lucky they stumbled into recovery. If it inspires one struggling reader to do the same, my co-author and I agree those dark seven years we endured will have been worth it.

I almost forgot to mention the CD’s. Eight of them, with tracks keyed to the narrative, so readers can monitor our alleged musical progress.

If you’d have an interest in seeing our story, send me a note. With enough requests, I’ll post each chapter once per week in the blog. Pimp My Profile
