About Me

My name is Ryan Songalia and I write about boxing for BoxingScene.com. I have been featured in the magazines Boxing Digest, FightWire Magazine and Premier Round.
My goal as a writer is to get the story out there as fair and down the middle as I can. I believe that it is on the media to help make a difference. Boxing is doing well, but there are still issues that need to be dealt with. The safety of the boxer and the forming of a national commission are two causes that I want to see advanced. A national commissioner would alleviate the corruption that sanctioning organizations and promoters have created in the last thirty years. Promoters and sanctioning bodies have tainted the title lineage to the greats, Ray Robinson, Joe Louis, and the such. There should be but one champion, as there is only one president.
H.L. Mencken once penned "The job of the columnist is to comfort the afflicted, and afflict the comfortable." With my pen as my sword, my goal is to bring a voice to the voiceless. I'm a working class kid from a working class home whose thoughts and aspirations are that of a working class man. In a world where fighters get their brains beaten in and see only a fraction of the pot, reform for injustice is the only justifiable cause of the columnist.
I love boxing, I admire fighters and trainers and everyone else who have made it their function to make the wheels of the game turn. At the same time, I find it hard to justify my enfatuation with a sport that is both violent and cold, yet so seductive and brilliant. When a fighter dies in the ring or is the victim of a bad decision or a mismatch, a bad taste arrives in my throat and once again reaffirms that I have no defense to offer to abolitionists. Boxing is a guilty pleasure, it's always been. But it feels soooo right when done correctly.
Currently, I reside in Vero Beach, FL.

I'd like to meet:

Me and my nephew Jonathon

.. width="425" height="350" ....

Music:

I listen to EVERYTHING. And when I say everything, I mean everything. Growing up I was into KoRn and other loud bands like Slipknot, but I've mellowed out a bit since then.

I still like some of the hard stuff, but not 24/7 like previously. I admire The Goo Goo Dolls, The Dave Matthews Band, My Chemical Romance and Gin Blossoms.

Jay-Z is one of my favorite hip hop artists. Lyrically, no one has ever approached the level he was at from 95-03. After that, I disavowed any knowledge of him. A Tribe Called Quest, Onyx, Wu-Tang Clan and Black Moon are my favorite hip hop groups.

It's important to have an open mind with music because if you can't open your mind to different sounds, how can you open your mind to anything new? You can't, because you'd be too set in your ways for change.

Movies:

My favorite movies are, in no particular order:
1. Goodfellas
2. Scarface
3. Fight Club
4. Usual Suspects
5. The Butterfly Effect
6. The Matrix
7. Akira
8. Half Baked
9. Napoleon Dynamite
10. Man On The Moon

Television:

My favorite tv shows are basically just animation shows. Here they are, in no particular order:
HBO World Championship Boxing
The Biography Channel
ESPN Classic Boxing
Family Guy
Samurai Champloo
The Sopranos
Six Feet Under

Books:

Only in America: The Life and Crimes of Don King- Jack Newfield
