About Me

Mark Southerland
Mark Southerland

My name is Mark Alexander Southerland. I was born April 9, 1970 in Beech Grove, Indiana. I am a musician and an artist of several mediums including fine art as well as multimedia.I served in the United States Marine Corps from 1988-1994 and was involved in the 1991 Persian Gulf war, acting as an infantry team leader. I left the Marine Corps, honorably, as a Sergeant in 1994. As a musician, I am a guitarist, singer/songwriter and stage performer. My experiences as a stage performer are most notable as the singer/songwriter and guitarist for the rock trio, Dent. Dent shared the stage with several national acts and achieved it's own pinnacle of stardom following a handfull of independant releases, innumerable shows, and live radio and televised performances.I attended art school in Chicago, aquiring an Associates Degree in Graphic Design and Multimedia. My work in Multimedia ranges from 3D animation, videogaphy, and digital painting for cinematic uses, also known as matte painting. Due to my experience as a musician, I am also a sound designer and continually write and record in my home studio for personal pleasure as well as for use in my cinematic work. As a painter, I am most familar with the use of acrylics.Stylistically speaking, most of my paintings fall in the abstract category. As a painter in the fine arts, I have found myself continually evolving into what comes most naturally. This evolution, in itself, has been a battle between my perfectionistic expectations and the illusion of control. Abstract Automatism has become my modus operandi in stark contrast to my calculating methods as a multimedia artist. My short attention span in many cases has forced me to develop processes that allow me to work quickly to achieve something I feel worthy of re-addressing for completion.I am finding that the common thread for success and happiness in not only my artistic endeavors, but also as a human being has been simplification. Ironically, simplicity seems to be a singularity that many of us fail to define in our lives. After all, this is no longer a simple world that we live in, but an amalgamation of complexity brought about by our desire to be more comfortable in what we have become.Mark Alexander SoutherlandGet Your Own! | View Slideshow

Anti-matter

Being bi-polar has to be the human equivalent to anti-matter.  I can only make healthy observations from one side of the fence or the other.  Looking back at whatever issue it was, it's usua...
