Once upon a time, there was a genre called DANCE. You didn't need to ask a DJ if they played old-school nu-school booty-tech-breaks'n'bass, NYC punk-funk-crunk or Euro-style deep-trance-house-step. You didn't need to ask whether they were CD, mp3, Serato Scratch, virtual reality glove or wax cylinder. You didn't need to ask if they were warm-up or peak-time, big-room or backroom, or whether they wanted red M&Ms on their rider. No – if you wanted to book a DJ all you needed to ask them was “CAN YOU ROCK THIS PARTY†and hope for the answer “FUCK YESâ€.
Kid Whatever is oldschool like that. That's not to say he's retro – hell no. He'll play old tracks, he'll play new stuff that you never heard before, but what you can guarantee is that it doesn't matter where or when a song he plays comes from as long as it ROCKS. THAT. PARTY. Back in Portland where he started out, the crowds didn't even bother picking apart his blends of big beat style breaks, cheesy club-pop and house, Shibuya-kei, Korean pop, obscure 80's hi-nrg, forgotten UK speed garage, bootlegs, mashups, cover versions and a ton of his own custom edits completely exclusive to his own sets – they just danced to it and if pressed they called it “discoâ€, because it rocked a discotheque every time.
Kid Whatever plays the music that makes people dance. What else do you need to know?
As a producer, both solo and with Peroxide Mocha and Grammar Rodeo, Kid Whatever has been rolling out the beats since 1997 - including contributions to the video games In The Groove and Dance Dance Revolution and to club legend Si Begg's influential underground hit series Noodles Discotheque. Now based in San Fransisco, he founded Donut Nook Records in 2008 to distribute international electro-dance-pop from the future.
