ReRun was founded in 1996 in Kentucky as a non-profit 501(c)(3) Thoroughbred adoption program and has chapters in Kentucky, New Jersey and New York. ReRun pioneered the concept that Thoroughbred horses do not have to be retired when their racing days are over, but can go on to productive second careers. Our mission is to help ex-racehorses find a second career through rehabilitation and training, then to place them in caring adoptive homes.
ReRun matches the physical condition and temperament of our horses with the experience and needs of prospective adopters. We have promoted the versatility of the breed by placing hundreds of ex-racehorses in adoptive homes where they have gone on to succeed in such diverse disciplines as dressage, jumpers, pleasure riding and even barrel racing.
ReRun works closely with other rescue and retirement organizations to place horses whose physical conditions limit their usefulness under tack, but which are comfortable as companions or pasturepals.
ReRun is dedicated to each horse in the program for its entire life. We require twice-a-year vet checks from adopters for the first two years the horse is placed in its adoptive home. ReRun horses cannot be raced or bred, but must be returned to the organization if the adopters lifestyle or needs change.
ReRun maintains close ties with and asks for support from the Thoroughbred racing community by reaching out to owners, breeders, trainers, track management, and farms for responsible action in the form of funding, housing, donations of feed, equipment and man-power to aid in the organization’s efforts continue our mission. ReRun is solely dependent on donations in order to support the many Thoroughbreds who need our help.
