semi-twang: a weekly radio show

Heard exclusively on Access Sacramento Community Radio : The Voice of Sacramento

Thursdays 6-8pm, Fridays 6-8 am

Semi-twang is a weekly radio show hosted by me, Paul Hefti; wherein the roots of music are wide-ranging and always growing. These roots include classic country, no depression, Brit-pop, new wave, old wave, blues, folk, bluegrass, soul, jazz, and whatever the heck else I can dig out of the 99 cent bin of your favorite record store.

Your favorite music

Well it just makes you sad.

But you like it 'cause

You feel special that way.

Eef Barzelay of Clem Snide - Your Favorite Music

People worry about kids playing with guns, and teenagers watching violent videos; we are scared that some sort of culture of violence will take over. Nobody worries about kids listening to thousands-literally thousands-of songs about broken hearts and rejection and pain and misery and loss. The unhappiest people I know, romantically speaking, are the ones who like pop music the most; and I dont know whether the pop music caused this unhappiness, but I do know theyve been listening to the sad songs longer than theyve been living the unhappy lives.

- Nick Hornby - high fidelity (1995)

A Huge Week

Every now and again, a guy needs a huge concert week.  I guess it is the equivalent of blowing the soot of out the old Dodge Dart--opening it up on the highway to 60-70 MPH and seeing if t...

The Long Weekend (in two parts)

Last weekend involved a trip, actually two trips, to San Francisco.  That is a story in and of itself but only worth repeating in the same way that someone might be interested in how the seams on...

My SXSW List

I am only now catching up on life after SXSW.  As the t-shirts proudly say, "So Much Music, So Little Time."   Here is my best of SXSW in no particular order, well maybe alphabetical:  ...

Let's Hug It Out Ponyboy

I was under the mistaken impression that Tim Burton's remake of "Planet of the Apes" totally sucked.  Granted it was a different movie than the classic (of which I just finished watching all...

A1 on the Jukebox

I popped in the new disc by BR549 and was soon lost in their cover of "A1 on the Jukebox."  Now BR549 has always had a knack to pick a great cover to go along with their own originals.  But ...

Stroking the Beard

I attended my first Bat Mitzvah and also saw Jack Gallagher's one-man show, "What He Left" this past weekend.  Where do I find o...

Pimp Michael's Ride

I just heard Michael Stipe's version of Joseph Arthur's "In the Sun."  The song was a perfect choice as a thoughtful Katrina benefit vehicle.  It is remarkable sometimes how a song can chang...

"Dig" That Crazy Plumbing

I watched "Dig!" on Sundance Channel over the weekend.  I turned out to be a prelude to my Super Bowl weekend of fighting 1940's plumbing.  Apparently Super Bowl Sunday is, to plumbers, just...

Battlestar Galactica VS. the Super Bowl VS. Godzilla

The last day of the first month of the New Year and I haven't even begun to figure out what my favorite album, er CD, of last year was, or is.  That kind of small minded thinking will get you no ...

First blog

Being a guy with a lot on my mind and an always present soapbox, this ought to be fun.  My first major project of the New Year is to make my way through my newly procured six DVD set of...
