The origin of The Jay Treaty began at Ferris State University (FSU) in Big Rapids, MI. It was there that three friends, brought together by a burning desire to create original music, set out in search of a lead vocalist. After many auditions, one name curdled to the top of the carton. That name? Jay Gaubatz. Jay, a young, long haired, singer-songwriter, with a melodic tone and punk rock roots was burning to perform the songs that he had created. Immediately there was musical chemistry and the band Aunt Moon was formed. This group performed at countless bars, basements, frat parties, and music festivals throughout Michigan, cutting their teeth and honing their talents. After two of the founding members of Aunt Moon graduated from FSU, the band went their separate ways continuing on in different directions musically.
After an extended hiatus from Aunt Moon Jay and James Oberlee (drummer) reunited and formed a dynamic 3-piece project called Ray Punches with bassist Michael Massie (Overloaded, JoCaine). Their tenure was short lived but the trio independently produced a highly regarded 4 song studio debut recording which stands as intimate glimpse into the Jay’s personal struggles and life experiences. Prescription was also released in the U.K., garnering them acclaim from the British press ("Prescription is a revelation - a treasure trove of sparky and wildly intimate songwriting."). After Ray Punches was dissolved, the founding members went their separate ways musically but kept in close touch.
The group later reemerged adding ex Aunt Moon lead guitar player Steve Yankee (Ten Words For Snow) and various bassists (now starring Mark Jardine (House of Usher,Tinscribble). This exciting new project entitled The Jay Treaty resurrected previously recorded Ray Punches tracks while adding differing structures and dynamics. They have also birthed several new tracks reenergizing the band and their fan base. The bands influences are widely differing and their sound reflects this in an effective manner. The band’s freakishly precocious ability to blend a frenetic edgy sound, with undeniably catchy hooks and dynamic changes, get them noticed. The Jay Treaty’s renewed energy and commitment to their songs is evident in their ‘can’t miss’ live performances. The Jay Treaty is focused on getting back into the studio to work on a full length album currently slated for release mid-2010.
The Jay Treaty is not currently signed with any label, and is ready and willing to consider a recording contract and/or documentary movie deal.
