Freestyle Assoc. is an experimental hip hop group native from the island of Puerto Rico. Though it’s mostly experimental, it also promotes the “hardcore†roots of hip hop, adding to it flavorful Caribbean rhythms like son, salsa, guaguanco, mambo, rumba and other musical genres such as drum & bass, electro, nueva trova, and even music straight from Latin soap operas. It would not be uncommon to find a cut made with music from Janice Joplin and beats from a 50 cent track. Each member has blended its style to one another so they can effectively create well balanced productions with one another without loosing their unique character, lyric treatment and inner rhythm. Put simply, beats made specifically for lyrics, and lyrics written specifically for beats. As a hip hop (rap) group, it doesn’t hide the DJ in the back, and has him as just plain decoration. It incorporates him completely into every track, keeping the culture and tradition alive. Freestyle represents freedom of style, rhythm and individual, while acknowledging hip hop roots, and promoting the study of its history, skills and disciplines and their applications amongst all its members. It represents what we want to make with our music, our culture and expression. Its complexity, flow and rhyme structure has never had an equal in Puerto Rico. Further more, it completely breaks with all the known patterns and formulas on how to make music in their beats, searching for sounds in non conventional places, so as to make a new and completely different sound. Freestyle brings a completely different and refreshing music proposal than its contemporary groups on its local scene, accepting and respecting the fundamental values of its culture, as a way of life, expression and using vinyl as a building block to create music. Its members have a solid urban background in a number of disciplines and skills. Some of them even practice three or more disciplines of this particular culture. Freestyle brings you a feast of music brought directly from vinyl, sampling sounds from local Puerto Rican and Latin American artists, instead the funk, soul & jazz commonly used in this genre. Maintaining respect for these genres and other fellow artists, but opting to go against the flow and everything common just for the exercise of being different.Freestyle Assoc. is composed by the following members:Predator (DJ/Producer)-
