Check this out…It was about ‘91 – ‘93 when hip-hop really took a hold of me. I know that they say it was the golden era of hip-hop and it really was. Being that I was from the bay area but living in Boise, ID it was crazy! All my friends from the bay would send me mix tapes so I always had the newest shit. It was cool, cuz in Boise it was hard to get anything on tape unless it was main stream, and vinyl seemed like it didn't even exist so when a new tape arrived everyone would get really excited. I still have a tape that was sent to me; on this tape was Souls of Mischief, Bored Stiff, the Heiro vs. Hobo Junction battle from the 10 O’clock Bomb, The Nonce, Blackalicious, Safir, Freestyle Fellowship, Casual, Homeliss Derilex, Del, RBL Posse, and some other of the illest songs I would ever hear. Keep in mind this is way back so all these tracks were either from the first album or a track that you could only get on vinyl from Leopold's Records. Knowing this made it even cooler because I new I was the only person in Boise with access to the best underground hip-hop and it just felt good! In 94 I moved back to THE BAY and still lived and died underground independent hip-hop so I basically lived at Leopold's Records, Amebas & Street Light records waiting (not so patiently) for a new tape or vinyl to come out or even a new DJ Tim tape! Props to DJ Tim by the way… I can't even count how many hip-hop artists I discovered because of that cat. Anyway, in ‘95 I moved to San Jose where I discovered hip-hop night every Sunday at the Cactus Club. This is where I first saw Mystik Journeymen...Always, always a good show! After that I must have seen Mystik Journeymen, Living Legends, Grouch, and the rest of the crew a million times over. One of the best nights of my life was at The Wave in San Jose when I soon realized Peanut Butter Wolf was spinning upstairs. I thought it was the dopest thing to ever happen. I ran up there and just lived up every minute of it until it was time to go home. It didn't seem like too long after that Swollen Members, Dilated Peoples, Jurassic 5 and various others would continue to pave the way in the independent hip-hop scene. Then Zion I, Atmosphere, Grouch and so many others just keep inspiring me everyday to handle biz, take action and keep it real.I am commenting about all of this because www.droplyrics.com is inspired and built by the artists who inspired me. Huge amounts of props to all of you and I can't thank you enough for impacting my life and others the way you did. If there are artists that were not mentioned...you know who you are and fat props to you too.AK aka illmyndid
