ABOUT PADDINGTON TERROR/TERRORTONE SOUND/RECORDS:The original Paddington Terror Sound System was born in 1969 to the great Miss Olive Douglas who dreamt of being the first woman sound system owner in Britain. The sound System dominated the whole of West and North West London throughout the mid 70's and 80's coming right through to now, battling sounds every week such as Java, Duke Vin, Lord Koo’s, Success, King Tropical, Warrior, Revolution, Coxsone, Frontline, Jah Shaka – just to name a few. Places to play in were abundant such as Crypt, the legendary Peoples Club, Paddington School on Harrow Rd, Route 18 and the like.
In a career spanning three decades, Terrortone Sound has emerged as one of England’s most hard working sound systems to date.
Reflecting extraordinary quality and consistency.
2003 saw the sound start touring Europe and promoting their familiar brand of music and spreading their unique sound and African message. The sound has toured a lot of areas in England, but we would love to go to Japan as we know the people over there really enjoy our reggae music. Also to, Africa, America, and JA and so forth to really get the experience, with the same intense fire, just like we get here. "A few of our most memorable dancehall experiences is/are (1) The annual Serbian tours and (2) the dancehall sound clash with Highteous Sound System at The Avenues Youth Community Centre, Paddington in July 1996.
However, unlike many of their contemporaries, Terrortone Sound have not suddenly jumped on the roots and culture bandwagon, and their emphasis is not on ghetto struggles or political beat downs. They have been playing roots & culture tunes from day one. They neither pretend to be something they are not nor speak of issues beyond their own reality.
Based in Paddington, London, where the founder members were all brought up, Wally set up his own little family sound system. In 1975 he joined forces with Tony Douglas amalgamating under one umbrella called Paddington Terror. Although the brothers went to Rutherford school in Edgware Road in the evenings everything was orientated round music. Musical education from their family and friends was invaluable as they studied all aspects of the singing trade, creating a family group, singing at family get together’s, and the like. Tony Modesty came along in 1977 with Daddy Ranx, working his way from the bottom – lifting boxes and running wires that sort of thing. Today I stand at helm of the ship co-producing music with Jerry Lions & Daddy Ranx.
"When you are given the opportunity to a big Sound System in the Dance hall arena, you reach out and take it with both hands.â€It's a gift and we must always value it."
As well as being brought up within a small black community, music has played a significant role in our upbringing.
"Going back to Jamaica was a key factor for the family", says Wally in 1988. As we felt jaded and needed to revitalise. We had to go back to our roots and rediscover certain things, also to see how the other half live. You get the real reggae feel when you're in Jamaica. There's no comparison".The first set of artist to emerge from this sound’s stable was brothers Tony & Keith Douglas, followed by Sweetie Irie and Joe Ninety and Daddy Ranks – these artists are well known in the reggae fraternity.Independently owned and operated. It is our goal to provide our followers with diverse, informed and intelligent coverage of today's music. We strive to highlight music and musicians who have been overlooked by the mainstream, as well as provide alternative viewpoints and opinions on the "popular" artists of today. In doing so, we hope to give followers the most comprehensive coverage of the music they care about. The music world changes on a daily basis and each new project carry’s its own burden. We try to avoid expectations because this can lead to disappointments. We are still developing and that is what music is all about-continued development. It shouldn’t stop no time at all. As a producer part of the motto is “despite the violence which surround us we always try our best to shine in a positive way and hope to inspire all the people not only the youth who are constantly struggling in the ghettosâ€.
The possibilities offered by the internet, myspace and so on have changed things for all independent artists. Listening to music isn’t a collective experience anymore, but a matter of individual choice. That’s why there is so much hanging on the question of distribution right now, because people have to go somewhere for music, and also information about it. We are not talking about a generation who go into record shops or newsagents to satisfy their curiosity about music, but online. Reaching people has never been so easy in one sense and yet you need to be aware of where they are looking for new music and how they want to receive it. We have to make connections in other ways and except that things have changed out of all recognition.
At present in the studio recording tracks for albums and dubplates for Terrortone Sound. These works are being overseen as well as co - produced with the help of Jerry Lions of The Twinkle Brothers and One Studio fame. In truth we are behind schedule and it’s taking more time than we thought, but neither the less very enjoyable. We are hoping to have an album out on the streets by the end of 2008 fingers crossed – keep watching this space.
