About Me

There is a wonderful review of MISTRESS OF THE SUN in the National Post , a Canadian national daily. "A delicious tale of romance and intrigue in the court of Louis XIV that will delight even those who cringe at the thought of reading historical fiction."See also the review of MISTRESS OF THE SUN from the Calgary Herald and Montreal Gazette:
"Here's a warning: Mistress of the Sun is dangerously seductive. It's one of those books that will grab you and hold you captive till the last page is turned -- and even then, chances are you'll find yourself, eyes burning, online at midnight, ordering Sandra Gulland's other books. Yes, it's that good."

I write historical fiction. I'm the author of the JOSEPHINE B. TRILOGY, internationally best-selling novels based on the life of Josephine Bonaparte, Napoleon's wife. The trilogy is published in 14 countries, in 12 languages, and has sold over a million copies worldwide.
My new novel, MISTRESS OF THE SUN, is set in mid-17th century France. A riveting love story with a captivating mystery at its heart, the novel is based on the life of an extraordinary horsewoman, Louise de la Vallière, who, against all odds, becomes one of the most mysterious consorts of France's King Louis XIV, the charismatic Sun King.
"The blockbuster"—Chatelaine Magazine
“No one gets more deeply into the heart and mind of a historical character than Sandra Gulland. In Mistress of the Sun, the joys and sorrows of Louise de La Vallière are so real and immediate that I now feel as if Louis XIV’s first mistress was a dear friend.” —Susanne Dunlap, author of Emily's Voice and Lizst's Kiss
"Mistress of the Sun is an excellent book, glittering and tender and soulful and wise.” —Merilyn Simonds, author of The Convict Lover and The Holding

Through LinkedIn, I recently made contact with a woman I "knew" years ago, in the days when I used to participate in a writers' group on Salon.com. The moderator at that time was (and perhaps still is...

stories + memories + facts = history

I've posted before about Adam Braver's novel, Nov 22, 1963. It's a novel about that day, the day President Kennedy was shot, but mostly it's a novel about Jackie Kennedy. It's beautifully, artfully, a...
