About Me

Forced to become a street performer by the age of four, Philadelphia native Poetica, a.k.a Natalie Natema, always knew how to please a crowd as she was coaxed to earn a living as a puppeteer on the streets of Philly. “We were so poor my father converted furniture into puppets and made us do voices,” she says, noting that it was probably the most devastating and painful situation she’s ever experienced but credits this as the reason why she is not afraid of anything. Poetica, a name derived from haters’ at an open mic night, turned this belittlement into a “term of endearment.”At 14, she was already a triple threat studying theater, music and visual arts at the local Creative and Performing Arts High School, but it was away from school grounds where she received an understanding of how art and entertainment fit within the lives of black people. As a spoken word linguist, she helped form the United Brown Poets, a group of teens that performed their own poetry pieces in various locations in Philly. “I’d always carry around a book of poetry I called "self,” she recalls, adding that it was this selfless expression that enabled her to cope with her traumatic experiences as a child. In no time, the streets began to buzz of her talents so much that she was asked to open up for “The Roots” label signing party, with MCA, held at the Trocadero in Philadelphia. “Someone was running late and they asked me to stall for time, the crowd went silent when I began talking and free-styling then I started to remember a poem and they loved it. That was the hottest moment ever,” she says about the opportunity to perform in front of established artists with an audience of over 600 people. She then recognized her extenuating talent and wanted to perform more. Although she went on to study Film and Photography at the University of the Arts she says she kept being pulled in the direction of live performance by hosting open mic nights at popular lounges in PA, lending her voice to drops on the radio and organizing a group called Sista which showcased females in the performing arts. She took the balance of her student loan money and rented a venue with equipment, lighting, and sound. Sista in Support of the Million Woman March had a large turnout, featuring poetry, a fashion show, an African dance troupe and a slew of R&B artists including Jill Scott prior to her record deal.An Excert from Black Star News "It's Poetic Music" As reported by Yasmin Weaver July 19th 2006 "New Yorks Leading Investigative Newspaper"

Band Members: The Past few years Poetica has been pleasingly busy in the Big Apple; Feature Films, Modeling, Producing and Managing a Production Studio; Poetic Palace. All the while still with a song in her heart. After the amazing New York experiences which landed Poetica in the south of France at the Midem conference with the likes of recording artists such as Shaggy she recognized after returning to the oversaturated undercaptivating industry scene in NY she needed to revisit her reasons for constantly returning to a career as a Performer. Basically the Highs and the Lows of NYC gave this songstress the "Blues" and it couldn’t have come at a better time. Recognizing she had blown enough loot to have purchased a small island on the cost of living in "the city" she had spent countless hours in numerous studios, paid musicians twice and still had no full length project to show for it. It was during a Holiday visit home she found her former inspiration an old Billie Holiday CD. The first cd to be on repeat in a young Poetica’s Boom Box. ~ Mobile Muse Media LLC"Billie was so ahead of her time, her childhood was hard and I think I connected with that at a early age; the pain in her voice" Poetica recalls. "I had a cd from her later years as a singer and the drag in her notes spoke to me directly. It was like she created a sound that was a sponge for my own pain. When she sang the pain oozed out and when I sang her songs my pain oozed out. The vocals felt like a blanket to me. When I put the cd on as a adult during the holiday I recalled the moment instantly. I remembered why I sing. The industry had there way with her and even so I felt she sang for release, for peace of mind if only for the moment of time the tune would play. I realized then in retrospect "I" needed a "Philly Holiday" ~Poetica aka Philly Holiday
Influences: “Everything I wanted to do, I came here and I did it,” she gleams about New York. Nothing tops songstress Alicia Keyes requesting her to sing at her book signing party for the novel “Tears for Water.” Gracing the stage with rappers Common, Kanye West and Mos Def convinced her that she has arrived musically and that it is time to record on her own. She has performed her demo songs “Water for Wine,” a house music selection about not giving too much of yourself to the point of discomfort and “Flow Fusion” a rendition of the classic reggae tune “No, No, No” with her group “The Contraband.” They have performed at numerous venues including the ALCU’s Right to Vote Tour with the political rap duo, Dead Prez. But it was an entrepreneur with a new marketing and promotions company called Blackline Entertainment, who saw her talent from miles away and offered to record her CD sampler. Poetica is currently in the process of completing a full length CD and hopes to gain more support overseas and here at home. Her song entitled “Water,” a collaboration effort with hip-hop artist Grand Agent, has sold over 30,000 copies in Germany. Her single “Flow Fusion,” an electric reggae/hiphop-spoken word joint is also currently playing on WKDU FM, a college radio station in Philly. “My focus is not for my music to be commercial—I don't mind the slow grind, passing copies to college students” she says, “because that is where young minds dwell without limitations." ~ Black Star News
Sounds Like: Excert From Writer Blocks Article www.writerblocks.com Questions By Traycee Lynn myspace.com/writersblocks Published in Print 2006FLOW FUSION Sampler CDQ: I heard a combination of Foxy Brown and Lauryn Hill in your flow, do you get comments like that a lot?A: Recently, I guess that means I'm doing it right (Smile) I'm starting to be compared to folks I love & admire like Angie Stone and Michelle N'degello. Foxy is Skills & Lyrics, Brooklyn's finest. One of the only Female emcees I enjoy next to Rah Digga. Lauryn is cool, I guest because we are from the same era and have had similar influences. Knowledge & Culture is my true inspiration. Artists that are not commercial or signed are my true favorites who inspire me. I've gotten all types of comments as long as they are positive I'm all for it.Q: Who did you work with on the cd? (production, etc)A: I conceptually collaborate with my deejay Rebel, also with musicians and the audience. I am a live performer from way back. Weather I had someone Beatbox, a band, a tape with tracks & static, Beat CD. I've always performed; so much of what I recorded was conceived live. I currently perform with a band I developed called the Contra Band. Poetica & The Contra Band was featured on the ACLU & Right to Vote tour with Dead Prez as well as the World Cafe Live in Philly. The members rotate from city to city yet I have a set group of folks who are always members. The general; Tony Rankin who plays reggae bass contributed to this project. The project was engineered in Manhattan by a drummer who appears on the Fusion track Jamaki formerly of a group called Survival Sounds. Before leaving Philadelphia I hosted a 24/7 online radio show. It became extremely popular. The facilitator grew insecure of it's popularity and called it quits and I was left wit some wonderful audio I collected. I would spin both indie and signed artists I'd meet while hosting at South Street Blues among other places. I used the promo drops from the show to place In Between Da Beats which was the name of the show. Cody Chestnutt's acoustic guitar and voice appears as well as New Yorks Battle MC Poison Pen at the Lion's Den, N.Y, Perry P formerly of 103.9Fm, PhillyQ: Is this your first audio project?A: Well, It's my first with the knowledge I have now. It's my first by way of production. I produced the Sampler, arranged and organized it. That's a first. I released a mixtape style CD Full length about 12-13 tracks entitled NUMBAONELYRICSIS. It featured A song I did with Jilly from Philly and Ace Born. It also included a track featuring Malik B (Roots) which was bootlegged and placed on (2 that I know of) other mixtapes & compilations. (There is one guy on the internet selling it for $40.) We had a release party at the October Gallery and it got some spins on Local College radio, a majority of it was done on my tascam 4 track, so it was air in it, it wasn't mixed which gives it that radio quality. There was virtually little money spent on the production, it was really rough. I am featured on the AWOL Revolutionary Artist Workshop Magazine CD vol. one Compilation with folks like Dead Prez & Spear Head www.awol.objector.org . I recall recording a song in 1998 for a hip-hop & poetry compilation entitled Urban Assault. The rest is features; I'm featured as a singer/ songwriter on a groove attack records release entitled "By Design" Track 14 Waughter. My Vocals are featured on the Wax of several Independent MC's that's rockin on top of their game. Philly Holiday© will be the first full length project; Coming Soon
