Falling in love, even when I know it cannot or should not last. Playing something new every time I sit down with a guitar. Wandering through town taking pictures at night with a bottle of whiskey in my purse. Reclaiming commercial interactions and spaces, and attempting to reinsert some level of humanity back into them. Having passionate conversations with intelligent people about changing the world. Hatching sometimes silly, sometimes serious plans of action to break the monotony of not only my hum-drum day, but hopefully jolting others out of capitalist tunnel vision, if not for just a second. Organizing locally to help chip away at hierarchy, imperialism and systemic oppression with the meager resources and inspirational synergy that a community of 50,000 can afford (which ain't much.)
People who are not afraid to live on their own terms. Who don't buy into consumptive, commercial distractions. People who aren't content with simply being pissed off in the face of injustice, but who aren't afraid to be happy in spite of it. Anyone who likes to dance in the middle of the street, share what they have, create beauty out of ugliness and struggle to overcome their socialized hang-ups and internalized oppression.
Oh the spice of life. I like playing it most, but I generally like listening to anything that is some combination of fast, loud, passionate, irresistibly danceable, ideologically radical or just plain beautiful. Current favorites are probably: The Decemberists, Arcade Fire, Tapes 'n' Tapes, Wolf Parade and Andrew Bird. Always close to my heart are: The Pixies, Sonic Youth, and Fugazi. I love all types of music though... Yes, including plenty of country. If you doubt the legitimacy of country, check out Wayne "the train" Hancock or Hank Williams III (of course, good ol' Johnny Cash as well.)
Anything that is created artfully and has some kind of social relevance is my preference, though I can enjoy my share of syrupy sweet mind-candy.
Turn if off.
I haven't read nearly enough.
Anyone who struggles in the face of seemingly insurmountable oppression.
