The Steven Mutter Trio was founded in June 2007 and debuted at the "Sounds of Stanberry", a community music festival held annually in Mt. Washington, OH. The trio consisted of veteren musicians Mike Georgin on upright bass, Stann Ginn on drum set, and Steven Mutter on tenor saxophone. The addition of keyboardist Andy Lenihan a few months later completed the quartet and gave rise to the current lineup. The quartet is focused on exploring the breadth of the jazz idiom and as such can be heard playing anything from standards to Latin to Post-Bop and Modern Jazz by such composers as Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter, John Coltrane, Sam Rivers, Thelonius Monk and Joe Henderson. Their goal is to approach each tune with understanding and insight in order to allow the song itself to become as powerful as possible. To this end, the quartet employs a deep understanding of traditional jazz methods and concepts, while striving to transcend to a level of moderness commensurate with the individual playing experiences of each of it's members. Each of the members has had years of experience (80+!) playing in styles as diverse as bebop, big band, blues, funk, fusion, reggae, afro-cuban and rock. By incorporating this wealth of knowledge into a modern jazz setting, the quartet is able to approach a variety of song settings with both traditional knowledge and a fresh approach.
