I married my husband Tom Horton on March 7, 1930. I have five children, Tom Horton Jr., Addie Horton, Mickey Horton, Bill Horton, and Marie Horton. I have 10 grandchildren - Sandy, Steven, Julie, Hope, Melissa, Sarah, Mike, Jennifer, Lucas and Jessica. Tom and I also raised two of our grandchildren, Jennifer and Mike, after their mother, Laura, was institutionalized. I also have many great-grandchildren and a couple great-great-grandchildren.
In 1977, I was shattered when I discovered that I had cancer from Dr. Walter Griffin. My faith in God was tested greatly, everyone was shocked as I was a good and honest woman and it was surprising that this could ever happen to me as a good Christian woman. However, my son Bill (who is a doctor) discovered that it was misdiagnosis, as Dr. Griffin had been too hasty as his wife died from cancer. Later in the year, Tom had a heart attack and my daughter Marie, who was now a Catholic nun, returned home to care for Tom.
In 1983 when Roman was arrested for the Salem Slasher murders, I helped him escape from jail by drugging some donuts I brought to him. Later when Roman was rushed to the hospital, I helped Bo block the road so Roman could get away. When Julie Williams left Salem, Maggie and I turned Wings into Alice's restaurant.
In 1990, I learned that my granddaughter, Jennifer, was posing as Katerina Von Leuschner and planned to marry Lawrence Alamain. I went along with Jennifer and pretended to be Cecily Smith. I went to Alamainlande with Lawrence and Jennifer and I realized Jennifer was in trouble. I tried to escape and get help, but Lawrence caught me and threw me in his make-shift prison along with Frankie Brady. After the escape from the cave-in at Lawrence's villa, I suffered a stroke and was forced to undergo surgery.
In 1991 I learned my marriage to Tom wasn't legal and Tom made matters worse when he didn't think to much of it. Tom said we were married in our hearts and that's all that mattered, but I wanted a real wedding. I went so far as to leave our house until he married me again, and on October 17, 1991 Tom and I remarried.
In 1993, Maggie and I invested in Billie Reed's up and coming cosmetics company Countess Wilhelmina.
After my children and grandchildren left the house, I became the Director of Volunteers at University Hospital. When the Community Center burned down, I convinced Tom to open up our home as the new community center. We named it The Horton Center. It provided shelter for run-away teens or families in need.
I am also well-known for my baking prowess, and my homemade doughnuts are legendary in Salem. Each Christmas I bake at least 18 varieties of cookies. I also started the tradition of reading The Christmas Story to the children who are stuck in the hospital for Christmas.
My trademark is unconditional love and loyalty. I am always there to lend a kind ear, a loving heart, and sage advice to my family and friends.
