50 Feet Tall

About Me

Fifty Feet Tall (or “50 Feet Tall,” the preferred handle) was a ’90s outfit that held together a motley band of starry-eyed man-children to rock New England and the Tri-State Area. They formed in Hartford, Connecticut, then migrated to New York City, where they remained until their split (more on that later). Although there was one long-time originator (John Thudium) and a few on-again/off-again sidemen (Chris Tino, Tim Lagosh, Darren, etc.), the definitive lineup was Chris Wiedemann (vocals and guitar), Mike Mongillo (bass), and Bobby Judkins (drums). These somewhat ill-fitted cogs were compelled mostly by artistic integrity and partially by brushes with fame and fortune to disseminate their own special brand of vanillay musical goodness upon the masses and, most of the time, had fun doing it. For a time there was something great that worked like crazy but this too is a story of tragic youth, wasted and spent, and living up to the title of their only full-length CD, 50 Feet Tall did indeed “Crash” and slow-burned as it shambled into an atmosphere of dissimilar ambitions, artistic differences, and life in general. Last time they checked in with each other, though, everyone said that they look back on it all fondly. So there’s that, right. That and the music that remains. Enjoy!

Sounds Like: The press, labels, suits, fans, and even detractors have compared 50 Feet Tall to: Dinosaur Jr., Flaming Lips, Afghan Wigs, Superchunk, Big Star, Tar, Shudder To Think, and probably a few more bands that no one presently recalls.

SOME OF 50 FEET TALL's FINER PRESS

"'Superhighway' is a scenic route through sophisticated power pop, its indie-rock crunch and zoom augmented by jazzy charges and ba-ba-ba vocals straight from the Association. Odd-time rock meets falsetto vocal on 'It's Not Funny,' bringing Shudder To Think happily to mind. A trio unconcerned with having an amazingly big sound for a trio, 50 Feet Tall compensates for instrumental sparsity with a rich harmonic palette. This is a great single."
- Alternative Press

"A well-defined rock trio with superior song writing ability, if this unit does not go far then there is no justice in the music world..."
- Northeast Performer

"50 Feet Tall takes the simple structure of a rock trio and proves its malleability...[by] cranking out sooth melodies...with the assurance of veterans."
- CMJ

"Their tightly wound guitar pop demonstrates that there’s room for new ideas when it comes to loud guitars and melodies."
- Magnet

"Combine a meatier J. Mascis...with indie pop hooks and up sprouts 50 Feet Tall."
- Amplifier

"If you like Big Star and you want something to listen to while you’re driving around...look no further."
- Carbon 14

"Cool post-punk pop with an odd lounge twist..."
- Aiding & Abetting

"The pop beauty and simplicity of this [Deep Elm 7-inch] wins top prize. 50 Feet Tall plays extremely smooth, simple pop that is sure to reel in a listener upon first hearing Chris Wiedemann’s voice. This one is addictive..."
- Instant Entertainment
