Stagmummer

About Me

"Fast, angry, jagged chaos from Winnipeg pharmacy students produced by Steve Albini! If Detroit's Laughing Hyenas had done crystal meth instead of opiates for a decade, they could only hope to sound as vicious as Stagmummer which means that this band runs on enough bile to send old Lucifer fleeing in fear. Scarier than a cold-blooded murder scene and nastier than anything AmRep has put out in years."

STAGMUMMER are busting through the picket fence before you know it and they're making a bloody mess. There's little mercy on their 1997 self-released "Rim", which was appropriately recorded (not produced) by Steve Albini. The "ugly-rock" genre requires brevity, and the Winnipeg quintet spews out 14 songs in half an hour.
STAGMUMMER began in 1993 when young pharmacy students C.J Bhutte, Rob Barteaux and Chris K Bauer began making music with their instructor Dr.Mike McIsaac. The trio recruited local victim’s rights advocate Jack Balles as their vocalist and began transcribing their chemical formulas into what Toronto’s Venue Magazine described as “drug rock for corrupt cops”. STAGMUMMER deftly combine science with insight to create an unsettling and aggressive sound that Minneapolis’ YOUR FLESH claims “wipes the passive Canadian stereotype right off the map.”
In 1995 STAGMUMMER released a split 10” with Meatrack on No List Records and toured the mid-western U.S. That same year, the quintet was completed with the addition of veteran guitar molester C.J Butte and proceeded to hone their notorious live shows into what Stylus Magazine has described as: “clamorous debauchery, equal parts Las Vegas showstopper and Cro-Magnon chest beating; in other words, not to be missed.”
In 1998 Mike left the band to pursue pharmacological research overseas. Without the doctor's soothing presence STAGMUMMER has become obsessive and vicious, as can be seen on their 1999 release, NUTCRACKER, produced by GGGARTH (Melvins, Jesus Lizard etc...) and released by SUDDEN DEATH RECORDS.

Sounds Like: "In the oozing muck somewhere between the chaotic jazz-tinged fuzz of the Jesus Lizard and the throw-down dirge of the Melvins is where Stagmummer seems to dwell. On their sophomore effort, this quartet of warped and wired Winnipeggers enlist the production assistance of GGGarth Richardson to ensure maximum grunt value from the recording session (they had similar big name talent behind the board for their 1997 debut, Rim, which was produced by Steve Albini). Jack Balles' distorted caterwaul and horn blasts cosy up to the neck snapping rhythmic mayhem of bassist Robert Barteaux and drummer Chris K. Bauer, while C.J. Bhutté's screeching guitar accents the whole unholy mess. A delightfully dangerous and fantastically fierce post-punk freak out." Stuart Green, Uptown Magazine...
