ORSON WELLS NIGHT – HERE WE APPRECIATE A FILM LEGEND –

CITIZEN KANE & THE LADY FROM SHANGHAI (1948)

Citizen Kane - Orson Welles reinvented movies @ the age of 26 w/this audacious biography of newspaper baron Charles Foster Kane (in essence, a thinly veiled portrait of publishing magnate William Randolph Hearst), who rises from poverty to become one of America's most influential men. A complex & technically stunning film, Citizen Kane is considered one of the best movies ever made.

THE LADY FROM SHANGHAI - Batten down the hatches -- it's gonna be one bumpy ride when Mike O'Hara (Orson Welles, who also wrote and directed) becomes a crew member on Arthur Bannister's (Everett Sloane) yacht. In nothing flat, sparks fly between O'Hara and Bannister's wife, Rosalie (Rita Hayworth), with murder not far off. The hall of mirrors sequence at the end of the film is classic Welles.

STAR WARS NIGHT (VINTAGE)WE HAVE STAR WARS, THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK & RETURN OF THE JEDI

DRESS UP, BRING YOUR STAR WARS GEAR (PJ’S, SHEETS, ACTION FIGURES & GET FREE COOKIES) & WATCH FILM HISTORY. TAP INTO THAT SCI-FI NERD.

In a galaxy far, far away, George Lucas put himself on the pop culture map & cemented his status as a legend w/this classic battle between good & evil. Intrepid Luke Skywalker, his trusty droids, & smuggler Han Solo face off against Darth Vader, trying to save Princess Leia & destroy the Death Star. A little help from Obi-Wan Kenobi never hurts.

05/09/09 SAT 7 PM

STAR WARS

Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace / Star Wars: Episode II: Attack of the Clones / Star Wars: Episode III: Revenge of the Sith

We are finishing up our Star Wars celebration w/the last 3–I mean the 1st 3 oh you know what we mean. Here is the breakdown of Episode I - In this Star Wars prequel, Qui-Gon Jinn (Neeson) & a young Obi-Wan Kenobi (McGregor) must protect the Queen of Naboo (Portman) from the evil clutches of Darth Sidious & Senator Palpatine. Along the way, they meet a prepubescent Anakin Skywalker, who shows intimations of a great gift. Dazzling special effects from director George Lucas's CGI specialists make this entry in the saga really hum.

SHAMPOO – HAIRSPRAY 88’

Warren Beatty stars in this farcical satire of '70s sexual practices, which was chosen as one of the AFI's 100 funniest movies. Beatty plays George, a Beverly Hills hairdresser who simply can't resist the women he glamorizes. He promises his girlfriend, Jill (Goldie Hawn, in a stand-out performance), that they'll settle down once he owns his own salon -- the catch is that he only has 48 hours to borrow the cash he needs.

05/13/09 WED 7 PM

THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL (1951 & 2008) A sci-fi hallmark (& wry commentary on the political climate of the 1950s), The Day the Earth Stood Still is less concerned w/special effects than with its potent message. A humanoid messenger Klaatu (Rennie) from another world lands in Washington, D.C., w/a warning to Earth's people to cease their violent behavior. But panic erupts when Klaatu is shot by a nervous soldier & his robot companion, Gort, attempts to destroy the capital.

ADDAMS FAMILY & FAMILY VALUES Stepping out of the pages of Charles Addams' cartoons & the 1960s television series, this big-screen version of the beloved, macabre family centers on con artists out to swindle the Addamses by introducing a bogus Uncle Fester (Lloyd) into their home. FAMILY VALUES - Wednesday & Pugsley Addams will stop at nothing to get rid of Pubert, the new baby boy adored by parents Gomez & Morticia. Things go from bad to worse when the new "black widow" nanny, Debbie Jellinsky, launches her plan to add Fester to her collection of dead husbands...

05/15/09 FRI 7 PM

LABYRINTH, LEGEND & WILLOW – cliff note descripts Labyrinth - Teenage Sarah embarks on a life-altering quest when she attempts to rescue her little brother, Toby, from the clutches of treacherous Jareth the Goblin King (Bowie), who lives in a castle surrounded by a giant labyrinth. Legend - Jack (Cruise) lives peacefully w/ihe animals & goblins in a mythical forest, until fate leads him to battle a host of terrors to rescue a captive unicorn. Willow - A dwarfish "Nelwyn" named Willow finds a baby adrift in a river and must protect it from an evil queen (Jean Marsh) bent on its destruction.

NEIL GAIMAN - STARDUST & MIRRORMASK – A young man journeys to a magical world to win the heart of his true love in this charming fantasy based on Gaiman's novel. Tristan has promised Victoria that he'll retrieve a fallen star to secure her love. Along the way, he battles a pirate Captain Shakespeare (De Niro), an evil witch (Pfeiffer) & other assorted goblins & ghosts. Peter O'Toole, Claire Danes & Rupert Everett co-star.

MIRRORMASK - Screenwriter Gaiman's masterful allegorical drama, which melds live actors w/animated characters, portrays the existence of a 15-year-old girl named Helena (Leonidas) in a civilization ruled by light & darkness. When the Light Queen loses her equal hold on the kingdom, plunging it into gloomy shadows, Helena takes it upon herself to restore the universe back to its rightful balance.

B MOVIE NIGHT – ATTACK OF THE GIANT LEECHES & ATTACK OF THE KILLER TOMATO’S

Leeches - Attack of the Giant Leeches, game warden Steve Benton (Clark) & a local scientist try to kill the monstrous swamp leeches that have been devouring the townspeople.

TOMATO’S - From the moment it begins, this kitschy horror movie boasts the makings of a cult hit -- & that it has become, even though it's decidedly low-budget & filled to brim w/camp. Director John de Bello manages to squeeze out the laughs from a highly improbable premise: Tomatoes become public enemy No. 1 when they turn murderous, preying on humans. It's up to Mason Dixon & his special team to stomp them out for good.
