ORSON WELLS NIGHT – HERE WE APPRECIATE A FILM LEGEND –
CITIZEN KANE & THE LADY FROM SHANGHAI (1948)
Citizen Kane - Orson Welles reinvented movies @ the age of 26 w/this audacious biography of newspaper baron Charles Foster Kane (in essence, a thinly veiled portrait of publishing magnate William Randolph Hearst), who rises from poverty to become one of America's most influential men. A complex & technically stunning film, Citizen Kane is considered one of the best movies ever made.
THE LADY FROM SHANGHAI - Batten down the hatches -- it's gonna be one bumpy ride when Mike O'Hara (Orson Welles, who also wrote and directed) becomes a crew member on Arthur Bannister's (Everett Sloane) yacht. In nothing flat, sparks fly between O'Hara and Bannister's wife, Rosalie (Rita Hayworth), with murder not far off. The hall of mirrors sequence at the end of the film is classic Welles.

Here is the breakdown of Episode I - In this Star Wars prequel, Qui-Gon Jinn (Neeson) & a young Obi-Wan Kenobi (McGregor) must protect the Queen of Naboo (Portman) from the evil clutches of Darth Sidious & Senator Palpatine. Along the way, they meet a prepubescent Anakin Skywalker, who shows intimations of a great gift. Dazzling special effects from director George Lucas's CGI specialists make this entry in the saga really hum.

SHAMPOO – HAIRSPRAY 88’
Warren Beatty stars in this farcical satire of '70s sexual practices, which was chosen as one of the AFI's 100 funniest movies. Beatty plays George, a Beverly Hills hairdresser who simply can't resist the women he glamorizes. He promises his girlfriend, Jill (Goldie Hawn, in a stand-out performance), that they'll settle down once he owns his own salon -- the catch is that he only has 48 hours to borrow the cash he needs.

THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL (1951 & 2008)
A sci-fi hallmark (& wry commentary on the political climate of the 1950s), The Day the Earth Stood Still is less concerned w/special effects than with its potent message. A humanoid messenger Klaatu (Rennie) from another world lands in Washington, D.C., w/a warning to Earth's people to cease their violent behavior. But panic erupts when Klaatu is shot by a nervous soldier & his robot companion, Gort, attempts to destroy the capital.

B MOVIE NIGHT – ATTACK OF THE GIANT LEECHES & ATTACK OF THE KILLER TOMATO’S
Leeches - Attack of the Giant Leeches, game warden Steve Benton (Clark) & a local scientist try to kill the monstrous swamp leeches that have been devouring the townspeople.
TOMATO’S - From the moment it begins, this kitschy horror movie boasts the makings of a cult hit -- & that it has become, even though it's decidedly low-budget & filled to brim w/camp. Director John de Bello manages to squeeze out the laughs from a highly improbable premise: Tomatoes become public enemy No. 1 when they turn murderous, preying on humans. It's up to Mason Dixon & his special team to stomp them out for good.
