Codex (EP Available now+looking for a drummer)

About Me

The Sportsmetal band Codex began in 2002 with a much different line-up than what is currently present. Codex was formed from the remains of Ballarat based metal band Rake and was originally called Flying Colors. Founding member Apauln was joined by Rake guitarist Jamie Armstrong on lead guitar, Drummer Glen Panke(who also played with Apauln in Ballarat band Wishbone) and Natalie Polson on Vocals.
The band stayed this way till early 2004 when they were joined by local fusion/rock bass player Alex Jovanovic. Now the original line-up was complete but in mid 2004 Glen and Natalie left. What followed was a long auditioning process and many drummers and vocalists were auditioned. By late 2004 Cam and Jin Walker were selected as new drummer and Vocalist and the band name was changed to Malicious Restraint.
The rehearsal process went on for a while, working on getting everything right and experimenting with new songs till Jamie had to leave the band in early 2005. Now the band was in need of a new Lead Guitarist. Once again there were auditions but the search did’nt go on long. Metal/Shred guitarist Brad Morgan who had played in a few band’s with Alex joined the band. The line-up was the bands most short lived as Cam and Jin left shortly after. Jill Aurther who had auditioned previously was given the roll as Lead Vocalist and Apaul changed from Rhythm Guitar to Drums and by October 2005 had rehearsed, played their first gig and changed the band name to Codex.
This line-up was the longest for the band and in mid 2006 They recorded their first demo “Burnt”. After playing a few gigs around Ballarat and surrounding areas Jill decided to leave in 2007 because she couldn’t commit at that time so now the search for a singer began again.
As the story goes, Alex and Brad were at one of the local uni jazz nights when they met Kya Knights. After talking to her she mentioned she was a singer. Upon hearing her Alex gave her a demo to see what she thinks of the band, 15 minutes later she replied saying she loved it. It was 2 weeks later Jill quit and Kya was auditioned and got the part right away. It wasn’t long till her first gig with Codex.
Right away the band got started on recording some more demos and trying to look for gigs until Brad quit in early 2008. This is where Adam Jones came into the picture. Adam had been previously considered as a second Guitarist for the band in 2007 but the idea was scrapped for no real reason at all, but with Brad out they needed a guitarist and Alex knew Adam well and his playing style from being at uni together and playing in various jazz and funk bands. Adam was welcomed into the band with no hesitation at all.
Something still felt like it was missing, it was the big and full sound they were capturing on the demos that were recorded. It was impossible to get that live with one guitarist so Apauln decided to go back on Rhythm guitar and Rock/Funk/Metal Drummer Corey Livitsanos was recruited to fill the last spot. Corey had played drums for the band on a number of occasions when Brad couldn’t play a gig so he already had knowledge of the songs and the Codex live performance.
Codex spent most of 2008 giging constantly, playing along side such great bands as Seldom Blue, Girl Vs Ghost, Dizzy Grass, Vox Populus and Divine Ascension to name a few, and gaining a fan base around Melbourne. With each gig the live show was growing in intensity and power and people who would see them once then see them 2 months later would notice dramatic changes. The key for the band is to be entertaining to watch, because if your not than what is the point. Just after Christmas 2008 they began recording the debut EP “A Flat Minor” but shortly after completing the drum tracks Corey left the band in early 2009.
He was replaced almost immediately by Ben Rodgers but left after 2 months due to other commitments. Corey stepped back in to fill in for some gigs during Mid 2009 including the EP launch for A Flat Minor on the 15th of May but has not rejoined. For the moment Apauln is sitting on the drummers seat until another one is found but it is still all systems go for Codex.
