Kelinda was from the Planet Kelva and a member of an expedition party from the Kelvan Empire in the radiation endangered Andromeda Galaxy. Kelinda's ancestors were part of a group of multi-generational Kelvan spaceships which had been sent to other nearby galaxies in order to find new territories for the Empire to conquer and occupy. After finally reaching the Milky Way Galaxy following several centuries in the intergalactic void, Kelinda's ship was destroyed in the process of crossing the galactic barrier. Under the command of Rojan, she escaped with three other crew members in a life-craft to an unnamed, but quite beautiful, Class M planet. The Kelvans then adopted humanoid forms which were more compatible with the new planet's life and available transportation. Following a false distress call, Rojan's crew hijacked the USS Enterprise, so that they could return home and report their findings to the Kelvan Empire. In the end, an agreement was reached between these Kelvans and the Federation in which Rojan and Kelinda decided to find a new home in the Milky Way Galaxy. When Rojan expressed concern as to where they could live, Dr. McCoy suggested that they could return to the same Class M planet where they had been residing when discovered by the USS Enterprise.
