About Me

IN A HIP HOP WORLD ONLY CONSISTING OF A HANDFUL OF TALENTED RAPPERS DOING GOOD MUSIC, THE HIP HOP COMMUNITY SUFFERS FROM WHAT WE CALL 'EITHER/OR' RAPS; EITHER EXCELLENT LYRICAL CONTENT(BUT LACKING A CATCHY BEAT AND CHORUS) OR CATCHY BEAT AND CHORUS (BUT HORRIBLE LYRICAL CONTENT). THE INNOVATIVE RAP GROUP 214 HAS BRIDGED TOGETHER MAGNIFICENT AND YET NOVEL PRODUCTION(MOSTLY DONE BY PRODUCER 'CB'), CATCHY CHORUSES, ALL WHILE DELIVERING AN UNTOUCHABLE FLOW THAT IS RELATABLE TO PEOPLE FROM ALL WALKS OF LIFE. REPRESENTING THE GREAT DMV, GETO AND BUD STARTED RAPPING TOGETHER IN THE 7TH GRADE AND STARTED TAKING IT SERIOUSLY WHEN THEY WERE REUNITED AT BOWIE STATE UNIVERSITY, WHERE THEY WERE INTRODUCED TO 'CB', A MUSIC MAJOR COMING FROM D.C. AND THE REST IS HISTORY....IN THE MAKING…STAY TUNED IN TO THE 2.1.4 SHOW!!!!!{}I made this myspace background at BackgroundStation.com

Tinsley Collegeradiomusic.comHip-hop has always been about progression. Regardless of what the critics and fans say about the genre being on life support and that the “glory” days of the music are a thing of the past, hip-hop has always been a vehicle without rear view mirrors. Such is the case with the D.M.V. area. Short for D.C./Maryland/Virginia, this part of the map was musically known for go-go, the drum heavy genre of music that was popularized by artists such as Chuck Brown and The BackYard Band.Although the music has gained little popularity outside of its birthplace, hip-hop artists are beginning to emerge from the D.M.V. Most notably, Wale, has been making serious strides in gaining national recognition with several highly popular mixtapes and features with artists like Robin Thicke, State Property and M.I.A. The snowball effect Wale is producing for his area is opening the door for several new artists hailing from the D.M.V. such as the group, 2.1.4.Both hailing from Maryland, Bud (Terrell Mitchell, Jr.) and Geto (Gene Tolbert) find themselves in the position many artists have seen themselves at one point or another, grinding from the bottom to the top. The juniors from Bowie State University (the group name originates from their apartment number from sophomore year) have only been recording for a year and a half but have found marginal success already. The two best friends recently won B.E.T.’s Campus Tour hip-hop challenge at Bowie which has allowed them the opportunity to open for Huey (“Pop, Lock & Drop It”) on Nov. 21 at Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, Va.Before they laid their first track, ground rules were etched in stone. The number one principle in their music that Bud and Geto both said was integrity.“Nowadays, a lot of rappers in the industry are getting their cards pulled about not living or doing what they are rapping about. You will never find lyrics saying ‘we gonna kill you’ or ‘we push weight’,” said Bud.In their camp, it is only one law they abide by. “We live by the rule, BE ABOUT WHAT YOU SHOUT. We may refer to a person or character who’s done it, but that is about it,” said Geto. Straying from the hardcore rhymes of some of their fellow D.M.V. counterparts, 2.1.4. has always seen their originality as a plus, not a hindrance.“We take all genre’s of music and we fit it into our style. We have our very own producer who is also a student here at Bowie State. His name is C.B. (Chris Barret) and he’s from South East D.C. Also, we have our own DJ, Nicolas Flamel, and assistant manager, Lakeya Barnes,” said Geto. The family atmosphere has allowed 2.1.4. to mature as artists, but stay grounded and focused at the same time.“We are all one big family. If it wasn’t for school, we would practically live in the studio. When we aren’t doing school work, you will always see me with a pen and a pad and Gene with some headphones writing bars in his sidekick,” said Bud.One thing that the group does not fear are other artists from the P.G. County area. The only competition they face are themselves. (For those that do not know what P.G. stands for, it’s Prince George’s County, one of the more popular areas in the D.M.V. region. )“We are really just out to show that you don’t have to be on gangsta sh*t to make a name for yourself. We use a lot of metaphors and I feel like a walking punchline at times. My biggest competition is Gene. We keep it real with each other. If your verse is wack, then it’s wack,” said Bud. “We inspire each other too, if I write a verse and its fire, he is going to try to out do me and vice versa.”After their performance date with Huey on the 21st, the group plans to continue recording tracks and pushing forward until their number is called. Geto already has immense aspirations for his music family. “In about a year or two, we see ourselves signed, Lord willing, right out of the P.G. County area. Hopefully by then, we can have a tour in the works and be well respected not only in our area, but worldwide. The sky is the limit for us. Look out for 2.1.4. in 2009. We all we got!!”Listen to a few of 2.1.4.’s tracks by clicking the links below.
