Born in Baltimore Maryland into a musical family, Shawn Brown grew up immersed in gospel music. The singer and keyboardist was performing in church before he was old enough to attend school. Says Brown: "We weren't allowed to listen to anything but church music, except for Billy Preston- he
had a church background- and Donny Hathaway."Shawn moved to Tampa Florida in 1980. A long and eventful music career has seen Shawn share the stage with artists such as Clarence Clemons, Percy Sledge, Christopher Cross, Earth Wind & Fire, Keith Sweat, Little Milton, Lucky Peterson, and Ronnie Earl. In 1986, Reverend Al Green invited Shawn to play the organ at his church in Memphis, where he stayed for over a month before traveling back to Tampa. In 1988 he recorded an album with a band called Blackstar entitled "Animal Attraction", accompanied by the Earth Wind & Fire horn section. Panda studio owner George Harris, who recorded Blackstar, recalls the sessions as some of the hottest music he has ever been involved with.Years later, Shawn received national attention for his performance on two highly critically acclaimed cds with The Willie Lomax Blues Revue. 1999's RIBS ARE READY and 2003's BEST BLUES MONEY CAN BUY earned Willie and his band multiple awards from blues magazines all over the country, including a Real Blues award to Shawn as "Best Blues Vocalist". Said Real Blues Magazine: "Shawn Brown proves once again to be a formidable gospel-styled vocalist and great Hammond organist whose vocal gymnastics make virtually every song he sings a standout." And Blues Revue Magazine said: "Suprise star Shawn Brown's bright, impassioned tenor handles blues and soul with ease, and his rich organ tones provide a soulful bedrock for Lomax's clear, focused guitar."
