About Me

I graduated from Cambridge University in 2009, having studied English for three years there. In that time I met people who challenged my views and helped develop my thought in enormously rich and helpful ways. I also presented a radio show for three years on the University Radio network, focussing mainly on free jazz and other experimental musics. In addition, during my time at university I became involved with free improvisation through the Cambridge Free Improvisation Society, and began to organise concerts and regular playing sessions. (I also developed some solo material, mainly in private, which, though improvised, tended more towards ambient/drone/noise.) In 2008 I founded the online magazine ‘eartrip,’ which puts out reviews, interviews and articles on jazz and free improvisation. I play and have played piano, laptop, recorder, percussion and voice. For me, free improvisation is inextricably linked to politics – as indeed, is all music – but with a far greater degree of flexibility and space for self-criticism, for questioning of its own modes and practices. I believe that it is a vital and necessary form of creation, and that any generalisations or misconceptions which have sprung up around – from its advocates as well as from those who attack it – should not stand in the way of those who truly wish to explore it further. ////////// RELEASES //////////// 'And do the Gods Desert Us?'
