Based in Christchurch, New Zealand, Soulsystem began in late 2007 as an experimental fusion of reggae and blues between lead singer and guitarist Tumanako Tinirau and bassist Jeremy London. The original 3-piece lineup was completed soon afterwards by Charlie Cottrell-Jury on drums and within several weeks the band began performing live.
Soulsystem's first recording the “Rise EP†was released in March 2008, immediately receiving airplay, and the band has since been steadily establishing themselves as an up and coming contender in the reggae/dub scene.
Over time a wide range of influences have left their mark on the band’s sound including elements of soul, ska, dub, funk and rock, and to date Soulsystem has shared the stage with a number of New Zealands finest acts including Salmonella Dub, Katchafire, Tahuna Breaks, Sunshine Soundsystem, Herbs, Taos, The Open Souls, and The Mamaku Project.
The music has continued to evolve with the arrival of new drummer Luis Tovar, and contributions by a range of talented guest musicians including Chris Leqeta, Davie Walters, Al Walsh and Josh Buckler. In addition to regular gigs Soulsystem can frequently be found hosting local open jam sessions.
