Diego Piñón was born in Mexico City in 1957. From his youth, he sought to deeply investigate all facets of his Mexican heritage. Diego entered training with Mexican guides of Energetic Movement in 1975. His academic studies in the social sciences were completed by 1979, at which time he began to dance at the Centro Superior de Coreografia. Diego studied Graham, Limon, and Horton dance methods. He continued therapeutic body exploration in Bioenergetics, Core Energetics, and Gestalt. Theater techniques include Ritual Theater and training with the Odin Theater, the Roy Hart Theater, and Teatro Tascabile. Diego also studied contemporary movement and therapy techniques of Release, Alexander, Klein, and Butoh, a Japanese style of Ritual Dance.
Diego was invited to train and perform with the Japanese Butoh dance group Byakko-Sha in the dance "Hibari to Nejaka" (1993). He was also invited for an artistic encounter with the international Butoh dance group Maijuku, under the direction of Min Tanaka. Diego performed in the piece “The Ancient Woman†(1994). During this time in Japan, Diego presented his first Butoh Ritual Dance piece "Zacuala," in Kyoto. With support from the Japan Foundation, Diego returned to Japan in 2000 and 2004 to=2 0develop a dance piece under the guidance of Kazuo and Yoshito Ohno. Among his Butoh teachers are the renowned masters Natsu Nakajima, Kazuo Ohno, Yoshito Ohno, Min Tanaka, Hisako Horikawa and Mitsuyo Uesugi.
Diego has enjoyed years of solo performance and commissions to direct professional dance ensembles and theater companies in the US, Europe, and Mexico. The Butoh Ritual Mexicano Dance approach is an evolving distillation of Diego’s extensive research in body-based energetic traditions around the world. The Butoh Ritual Mexicano Dance Center was established in Tlalpujahua, Michoacan, Mexico in 2002. The center is home for Diego’s work, although he routinely travels. In addition to offering ongoing classes for Mexican students, Diego conducts three, weeklong intensive workshops at the center for non-Mexican students in the spring, summer, and winter. In the US, Diego leads multiple workshops, classes, lectures, and performances in various cities at various times throughout the year.
