THE ART OF IMPROVISATION AND THE SONGS OF GABRIEL KAHANE
International singer/pianist/songwriter Gabriel Kahane and award-winning jazz pianist Dan Tepfer in an amazing collaboration in which Kahane performs a set of his music solo and then Tepfer and his trio perform the same songs reinterpreted, as an exploration of songwriting and improvisation. Both dynamic performers in their own right and long-time admirers of each other's work, Kahane and Tepfer have brought this wonderful concept to audiences worldwide.
SUNDAY, APRIL 20, 7pm. Caruth Auditorium
OLD AND NEW NARRATIVES and CHAMBER MUSIC WITHOUT BOUNDARIES
An amazing program in four parts. The first two parts will see music as narratives. From the four hand version of Ravel's Mother Goose Suite (featuring all of MUP's pianists together) to Kahane's highly celebrated song cycle Craigslistlieder, art-song settings of eight anonymous posts he found on the ubiquitous personals/classifieds website Craigslist. The cycle has won over fans and critics with its affiliation of raucous pop culture and deft high-art craft and has been performed in venues as diverse as the darkest rooms of Brooklyn and the world-famous august Ravinia Festival in Chicago.
The second two parts will celebrate Chamber Music in two different formats. The amazing Dan Tepfer Trio will have a Carte Blanche, and the glorious Piano Quartet in G minor by Johannes Brahms (with its cheerful and passionate Rondo alla Zingarese, designed to bring the house down)will be performed by some of today's top classical musicians to bring the perfect closing to MUP!
