About Me

A drummer in the early Punk scene in San Francisco (1977-1981), Chris Coon played with bands that paved the way for the Bay Area movement: Impatient Youth, The Sleepers, The Woundz, Clocks of Paradise and No Alternative among others. In 1983 he entered a new underground: studying New Music composition with avant-garde trombonist Vinko Globakar, tabla with acclaimed drum master Pandit Taranath Rao, and electronic music with innovator Morton Subotnick and Barry Schrader at Cal-Arts.Chris Coon scored work for Los Angeles choreographer and performance artist Rika Ohara and has performed with media poet Heather Haley and Canadian indie songwriter Julie Vik. His new CD, License to Depart, blends avant-garde with unpredictable and moving rhythms. The electronic spine of his new creature is fleshed out with vocals, guitars, bass, live horns and drums--laden with pop, jazz and experimental textures capturing a feeling provoked by meditating on mythical themes - the journeys of Odysseus, the Labyrinth of the Minotaur - and a pervading sense of who we are.The CD will be available online on February 10th through CD Baby, iTunes and Amazon. Here are the CD liner notes!License to DepartComposed & Produced by Chris Coon Recorded at Blue Magus Studio with additional overdubs at The Treehouse Studio and Featherstone Recording Studio, Bowen Island, BC 2007-2008 Engineered by Chris Coon at Blue Magus Studio Mixed by Rob Bailey and Chris Coon at The Treehouse Studio: Track 1, 4, 5, 8 Mixed by Shael Wrinch and Chris Coon at Stone Hill Studio: Track 2, 3, 6, 7 Mastered by Rob Bailey at The Treehouse StudioMusiciansChris Coon: Vocals, Guitar, Keyboards, Cord Jacks, Drums and Percussion.
